1987 BMW 325e

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Should I buy it? Supposedly has had all kinds of work done on it and is in great shape. Is this a good car for my 17 year old son? Are they dependable? Expensive for repairs?

"all kinds of work done on it and is in great shape" Kinda an oxymoron in my experience... That being said get a PPI (Pre Purschase Inspection) from a trusted mechanic. BMW's are reliable cars, but they do cost a bit more to maintain and repair. (IE teach your son to change his own oil). Supriseingly in my experience it's more the cost of OEM parts, but if it's something you can do yourself, pelicanparts.com, has most anything you need at much more reasonable prices in most cases. I would say it's a 20+ year old car and you haven't told us how many miles are on it or what kind of work has been done so I'm being very general. Make sure you have it inspected first.

I have an '86 325e. It has 155000km. I bought it at 151000km. When I bought it, there was all kinds of problems because the previous owners didn't take care of it properly. For example, my whole drivetrain vibrates the car on take-off, up til 25km/h. Blower motor bearings were seized, so no heating. I would continue to list, but it would get too big. Anyways, all I'm saying is make they sure they have taken care of it. If they have, these things will go to at least 350000km.

I recently bought an 84 325e. As an automotive tech i would say they are some of the best cars on the road. Before you buy the car have it inspected at a shop and have them give you the report. Only the basic maintenance like brake pads, rotors need to be done at regular intervals. Mine had brake line rot so i had to replace all the lines but its not to bad of a job. I would say that it is a great purchase for your son. The 325e has alot of potential as a tuner car as well. I know that if he got into the BMW community like i have he will have alot of fun. I go to car shows and car club events were we go for cruise rides. Just relaxed drives on scenic roads.

It is an awesome car. Keep in mind that it is a BMW and parts and labor can be expensive. Find a local mechanic who you trust and let them do any work needed. Again, it is a BMW. I have the 1985 325e and I have done all repairs myself. You can find parts online relatively cheap...I would reccomend NOT taking it to a dealer. It's usually $500 just to pull it into their garage. No offense to any mechanics that work at dealerships...it's just fact. Good luck!
