Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Back after a trying to figure out why my car wont rev past about 3500rpm's. Run Down: (5 speed, does it in all gears, seems to rev a little higher in first) I put new plugs in it(gaped at .035), new air filter, swaped the MAF, just put a fuel filter in it (fuel pump was replaced 3yrs ago). I have no idea where else to go with this car, it starting to drive me crazy! Wondering if this has happened on any other E36's or do I just have that SPECIAL car? Any help would be great, thanks.

have you had the fault memories checked with a scan tool?

Check your air-fuel regulator/modulator. Unplug it and check if the revs improve. Chances are that it may be your problem...

Yea, the VSS and he said it was reading a little low on the air flow. I got a rebuilt MAF from a place on e-bay, not the best idea, but it was cheap and didn' want to spend $3-500.00 on a new one to find out that is not the problem. Once I swaped it, seemed to rev better but still only went to about 3500rpm. Not sure where to go next.

have you tryed revving the car with the a/f meter disconnected. if the unit is faulty this can allow it to rev out. this my also indicte if you ebay maf was worth the effort

Sorry, i was talking about the oxygen sensor(normally located on the exhaust, near the front, you'll have to jack up the car to see it) as it helps the ECU regulate the fuel being injected. If, however, you've already replaced this, there may be 2 other things to check out. a) check if everything has been securely fastened/replaced(screwed on tight enough) the last time someone had a look at your car, or b) check your catalytic converter. All the best of luck...

I have an E36 as well mate and it could be the fuel pressure regulator or as above the air flow meter. An E36 wouldnt have a MAF i didn't think they would have MAF's mine certainly only has an air flow meter. But given its a rebuild i'd buy a new one or buy a proven-to-work rebuilt MAF. Best of luck.
