'98 bmw 328i triple beep, what does it and what does it mean?

ocassionally when driving a '98 328i bmw, i notice a sound of 3 beeps. the beeps sound like they are produced by the radio or possibly some other type of electrically generated sound, popssibly the on-board computer? i'm really not sure... does anyone know what may be producing the triple beeps and what it might indicate. also any information that could reduce or eliminate the beeping. thanks for your help! sincerely, frostyfella
