I purchased an 85' 318i with similar symptoms explained by previous owner. The shift knob felt extremely "sloppy" to me so I bought the car on a hunch.. Shift tower mounts. They are cheap. And both on this ol' gal were cracked/broken. Easy to replace on my model. Didn't need to remove driveshaft or anything to crazy. Its worth a quick look, to rule out. -chris

I own a similar 1999 BMW 328i E93 N51. My son, the previous owner, had your problems with his transmission. I know the dealer fixed his car for free under an extended warranty. The dealer blamed my son for poor driving skills. I hope your problem is as simple as Maxm10's experience. Perhaps it is a leaking shift shaft seal (there are two or three of these seals). When you get your transmission fixed, be gentle with your gear changes. ;-)
