Interesting problem, I don't belive it could be a fuel pump mainly for the reason fuel pumps either work or they don't. Your filter may be clogged causing a lack of fuel to the rail. Or you might have an issue with air not getting to the motor, either way your car isn't getting the proper mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder. I would sugget changing your fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in the past 30,000 miles and use only preimium fuel. Hope that helps if not message me back.
Same happened on my old 330i. I replaced camshaft sensors and checked for air leaks. Also get the diagnostic trouble codes read.
try replacing the fuel pump it is a problem that usually happens wit the 330
where is the fuel filter located on a 2001 330I?
Your catalisers may be blocked. Maybe due to leaded fuel. Remove both the front and rear catalisers and replace with a silencer. Will enhance the performance and stop the stalling.
Cam sensor is a very common item. Had it happen on my '01 330. The symptoms were just as you describe. A stumble at idle and very rough running trying to move away from a stop.
Fuel pumps often break.I had a 318I that broke down at the same place on the motorway on the way to work everyday. Finally sorted it out the fuel pump had broke and when i went down a hill on the motorway it blocked the fuel going to the engine very annoying..Check the fuel pump out in the petrol tank under the rear seats first...
