The last 2 days my 2005 BMW 325i started squealing on my commute to work. These days were 3 days apart and each followed a snow day in our area. The squealing started after I exited the highway about 20 miles from home and at a slower neighborhood speed. The squealing stops when I apply the brakes. No indicators come on the dash and it did not reoccur on my drive home those evenings. Any idea? First thought was brake pads.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

High pitched squeal that begins after 20 miles into my commute on 2 separate days that followed snow.  Occurred after exiting highway and slowing speed in neighborhood.  Stops when I apply brakes and did not reoccur on the drive home those evenings.  I have had it 1-1/2 yrs. and never changed brake pads.  Is that where I should start?

I would have someone take a good close look at the brake pads. They may be worn out.

If it's a constant squeal while the engine is running, then sounds to me like it could be a slightly loose belt. It makes noise when it's fully heated and stretched, but at a light load. You might be able to adjust the tensioner pulley and quiet it down. If it only happens while the car is rolling then it's likely a brake rotor. The brakes may just have something in them. You might try taking the wheels off and look for a rock or something; spraying brake cleaner while you spin the rotor backwards and it might do the trick.

Probably have to tighten your pulley or tention pulley belt thing. Thats what it is. If its not that then ur surpenteen belt throw some baby powder in it.
