My 2003 X5 has oil in coolant, but not water in oil . I started to pull the cylinder head, but remembered that wife said the transmission was acting funny. I drained the transmission fluid it was almost gone and mixed with water. Check this first before you pull half the motor apart like me. The only place it can get in is the cooler.

Because of gear cooler leakage or engine cooler. Depends on what kind of oil is in your coolant tank
