The e34 530i has V8 similar to the 540i and, unfortunately, an unusually large proportion of the engines of this vintage suffered premature cylinder bore wear issue due to the use of Nickasil lining (which reacted badly with the high sulphur content of gas sold in North America). Most of these engines required new blocks (which used Alusil bore lining) to rectify the problem. Obtain history from BMW to see if this car, indeed, has the new block. Symptoms of worn cylinder bores include loss of compression, poor idling, heavy oil consumption, etc. If none of these problems exist, you are now opened to the opportunity of owning this unique and very rare BMW.
This can be checked by a reliable BMW Dealership or specialist. BMW fixed most of these engine issues under warranty. It also depends which country you are in

they dont make one.530 has a straight 6.that could b a problem
Please read my post above carefully again and be assured that the 3.0L inline 6 (small block) was not even in existence yet in the late '90. We are talking about the e34 model here.
you should check out for the recalls for the model. otherwise 5 series has always been very reliable. http://bmw5series.net/
