Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Tom Demyan answered your question: "I have a 2000 BMW 528i with 200k miles on it, service engine soon indicatir came on however everything seems to be running great. Could this be just air cleaners replacement or similar? Would rather not go to dealer if I can eliminate myself.".

He wrote:
"Your best bet would be first to purchase an OBDii scan tool to find out what code is setting off the light. Once you have the code or codes, post back here and we can begin to fix the problem. Basic scanners run $25 to ones a couple hundred that can do everything."

Do you live in California? There is an air pump on cars manufactured for sale in Calif that pumps air in to the exhaust stream as part of the emissions package. I know if no other State that has that pump, and that may be what "secondary air pump" is. If so, it's not a difficult fix. Far be it for me to attempt to field a question directed at Tom: He knows more than I do, but thought I might be able to help. If this car is not registered in Calif, forget everything I said.
