Check Engine Light Stays on After Repairs

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light has come on again and the mechanic can find "nothing" wrong with the car. This seems to happen all the time! Any ideas on what I can do. It has 80,000 miles and has been maintained according to the manual.

First, make sure your mechanic truly knows how to read the OBD information. I was fortunate enough to find one here in my area who seems to really know what he is doing. He found the cause of a SES light on both my Z3 and my E39. Both were related to, what in my mind, would be odd causes. One was an O-Ring on the dipstick, causing an air leak, and the other was related, in a way - a cracked valve cover. Relatively speaking, the cures were not overly expensive. According to what my guy tells me, he can connect his computer to the diagnostics in the car, and drive the car, watching readouts change with engine speed and load. He even found a faulty brake-light switch. Don't give up.

engine light in red or yellow. both can be linked to differing issues and ones in yellow dont always log codes.

this could be due to many things but one that doesnt always leave a code is the oil level/condition sensor which can cause sporatic engine and oil level lights despite the engine being fine.

you need check out the code first, then the code can tell you what's wrong with your car, for your car the EOBDII/CAN OBDII Scanner PS100 can read code for you. http://www.chinasinoy.com/wholesale/eobdii-can-obdii-scanner-ps100-750.html
