New 2017 540 xi "check engine light" keeps turning on
Asked by GuruQC66 Apr 27, 2017 at 02:49 PM about the 2017 BMW 5 Series 540i xDrive Sedan AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Just purchased 2017 540xi but the 'check engine light" keeps coming back on
even though it's been serviced by BMW twice for this problem. Is this a serious
problem, software issue, etc? Need dependable transportation at all hours of
the day and night bc need to get to the hospital to treat patients asap. Please
help.

They must know the codes that they have to clear ... make them tell you what they are -- I suspect that they are emission related and the shop is hoping they will go away'' Tell them that it was a "software issue" that is costing VW (another German company) over $15 Billion. That's outrageous that a car like BMW is serviced by shoddy mechanics
And the only way to tell if it's serious is by knowing the code the CEL generates
I just dropped my week old 540 for that same problem
Oh that stinks! Best wishes for a quick fix for your car!
I was told it's a "gas tank sensor" that needs to be replaced. Part won't be in until next week... not a good start . Best wishes to you as well... you need to get to your patients!!
That's got to be the biggist crock I've heard this year. I'm a retired engineer and if I were in the most remote area in the world ..I can have the most intricate part made delivered in 1 day. We're not talking about a Ford Fiesta we're talking BMW
I got the same issue with my 10 day old 2017 530. It has been in the shop for a week and they are ordering parts for it that could take another week. Hard to believe I bought a bmw.
Time for you to mention "Lemon Law" and see it it gets a reaction
Document EVERYTHING and complain directly to BMW. This will help you if you have to sue or you try to make BMW buy the car back.
I am doing all communication with the service rep via trxt message. I wish I could give thr car back to them, but I think legally it is too early for that. They took all the joy away from driving a brand new car.
My check engine light is on once again after filling my tank. Gas sensor light replaced last week. I'm so done!!!
I am also got the same issue in 7 days for my 530e. Got the car back after 4 days. They said that it was software issue and they have performed reprogramming or whatever that means. I hope this does not resurface.
GuruZ11C4 - what did you discover was the issue with the 530e? I have the exact same issue. Check engine light on in 3 weeks after taking delivery.
Not sure about the reason or the resolution, but dealer states software issues. My car has been in the shop 4 more times and a total of 45 days in the shop. Considering taking the lemon route.
Thanks. Bummer. I’m going to take it in tomorrow or the day after. Disappointing if they can’t figure it out.
Will also let you know what my dealer says.
My first reaction to that news is their doing a VW fix on the alarm parameters .(VW was just fined billions for a software fix that allowed some of their cars to get bogus emissions readings).. sort of like if your fuse keeps blowing out // rather than fix the problem just put in a bigger fuse
Quick update: This morning, I opened the fuel tank cap and closed it (twisted till I heard the click sound). After doing this, the check engine light went away. Will see if it returns and then take it to the dealer.
So how off was your gas cap? Could you tell when you first went to retighten it? Was it obvious?
2017 530 x drive, 11k miles. The light initially lit up around 4 weeks ago. I immediately called an BMW tech who advised I brought the car in for service. It took 4 weeks for my BMW dealership to provide an appointment as I required a loaner car since they advised it might take a few days. Upon arrival with my 12 month old son (on thanksgiving eve), I was told the shop was backed up and they might need to hold on to my car for at least a week, if longer, plus no loaner cars were available and directed me to rent a minivan from enterprise. After a grueling hour, I had to just take back my 2017 5 series back and go home. I called bmw corporate who couldn’t care less and advised me to schedule a future appointment through another dealership. I stated I would prefer not to drive my kids in a car with a check engine light for another month, bmw replied with “we can’t help you with that”.
My 2018 540i engine light came on at 11k dealership took care of it claiming radiator flaps. A week late engine light comes on again and I noticed flaps were shut. I read flaps should open then ac is turned on plus it was 100 deg. Still waiting for BMW response.
