what do i need to buy to fix?

My 2006 bmw 530xi slips in 5th gear when i hard
accelerate, the transmission malfunction light is on,
but it shifts fine 1-4. light only comes on when i
HARD accelerate in 5th or 6th gear. Please help! it’s
my first bmw, i got so excited and then this
happened, hopefully it’s just a gearbox or low fluid
and a bad filter...

You are about to find out why buying a used BMW was a bad idea. My guess is that it needs a transmission.

The overdrive band is toast, like Bob said, time for a transmission rebuild.
