I am having the same problem with stalling at a stop. Could it be a fuel filter?

No, I have never seen a "Bad" fuel filter unless you live in some scummy third world country. It can be the Throttle Position Sensor, a Vacuum Leak, or the Common Ford Idle Air Controll Motor.

I did change the fuel filter and a lot of gunk came out. I sort of do live in a scummy third world country...Louisiana....all the debris in the air after Katrina could have done that. However, I am still having the same problem. Can you give me just a short explanation on checking the Throttle position sensor that you are suggesting? thanks

I'd check the EGR valve. They can get chokey with no apologies-
This may sound strange to car guys, but I had the same problem with a 1990 F150. After 4 shops and $1600 in bills, I finally asked my dad. He spent 5 minutes under the hood and diagnosed the problem. The tensioner for the serpentine belt was bad and occasionally catch and kill the engine at idle. $25 dollar fix.
