Asked by DUSTER340 Nov 17, 2014 at 05:04 PM about the 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

5.7 ENGINE INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION NO EXT. LEAKS,  FOUND OIL ON THE AIR FILTER VIA THE TUBE THAT RUNS AROUND THE FRONT FROM THE OIL FILLER CAP ASSY.  CHANGED PVC VLV AND CLEANED AIRBOX AND THROTTLE BODY OF THE ENGINE OIL THAT HAD BUILT UP.  THE PVC REMOVED WAS GUNKY BUT IT DID RATTLE WHEN I SHOOK IT.  WHAT ELSE COULD BE CAUSING CRANKCASE PRESSURE BUILD UP.  I JUST DID THIS WORK AND CHANGED THE OIL 11-15-14.  I WILL BE MONITORING BUT I DO NOT THINK I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM.  YOUR COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

the 2000 mile = 1 qt consumption is within factory standards.Replacing the valve seals will resolve this issue(as long as the plugs are burning clean I have no issue with this, fact is your top end is getting lubricated) and while your at it also replace the valve springs with a good aftermarket set.Hemi is known for issues in this area with the valve springs fracturing. As far as the ticking goes,it's the nature of the beast.
