How do I reset the radio code if the error code is: E

Asked by Robert May 24, 2016 at 11:37 PM about the 2011 Honda CR-V SE AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Battery was dead due to headlights left on all night. Tried to reset several times  with good 5 digit # but currently the display  shows: CODE ERROR E
Time read out but time is wrong
Do I disconnect/reconnect the battery and start over? How long disconnect.
(One forum says this will bring back ERROR CODE 1. Is this necessary? Another says if I use ten incorrect error code entries radio will be toast.)

If you enter the wrong code too many times, it will lock you out permanently. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the lock out, then try the code again. Make sure you're using the code in the owner's manual.

I also did this, after failed attempts at other methods..and it worked. Disconnected battery completely for 10 minutes, the Error E code was gone, and I could enter the code for my radio. Still, though, this is ridiculous for a factory 6 CD changer stereo. Who is going to steal THAT?

It worked for me too! I have a 2009 Honda CRV. I too had Error Code E and it was locked. I disconnected battery for more than 10 minutes...doing chores around the house. After 30 minutes past I reconnected the battery. ENTER CODE was now back on, like you described. But I was DUMB...i accidently entered the wrong code....I wasn't sure what do do again. I pressed some number reset buttons on the panel and I got it back to say ENTER CODE. Wheewww.....so I reentered my factory code carefully...AND IT WORK!!! THANK YOU ALL!! I also got to reset my clock finally. Now it is working. The trick is disconnecting battery for more about 10 minutes....

This is so simple. I'm confused why Honda doesn't suggest this solution. They should publish the error "E" problem so that dummies can find it. They do say that if the fuse to the radio is blown then you will get an error code. Good luck ...

if you hold the negative and positive battery cables together after disconnecting them, it will drain the computers faster so you dont have to wait as long. Should only take a minute or two.

Had this same thing, but it clears after you disconnect the battery. BUT in most cases that won't fix it completely as it will then say CODE, and will ask for a radio code. I got my Honda's radio code online from: radiocodevault.com/honda/

Reving an old question but I felt obligated to put my 2 cents worth in. Verbatim from the owners manual. If you exceed the 10 tries leave the radio on for an hour and try again.

Make sure you have the RIGHT CODE. For my 2010 Honda Fit, I was up to Error Code 5. Thought I was screwed ,don't know why I opened up the passenger glove box but I noticed a sticker there with two sets of number codes. Type in the 5 digit (letter less) code. The radio beeped and resetted...Not everyone will be that lucky but look around ...codes ARE everywhere !!

Disconnect battery for 10 minutes. Code will reset. Don't pay to get code. If you are sitting in the driver seat, open the glove box. The number is on the side of the glove box. 5 digit #

Okayyyy, so I fixed this! I solved all of this by just going to a website I found. They specialize in helping people fix this, and they have a service where they help you via email. Here is the link radiocodevault.com/honda

Yea, hmm as others have mentioned, the current easy way to fix this is by using radiocodevault.com as its all done online. You just give them your VIN # and then they'll help you out with getting your radio unlocked and working again after they research it for you.

Thanks GuruZN8TK. The code/ser# card given to me by Honda when I bought the car new had the wrong information. I used the method mentioned above to retrieve the actual ser# of the radio. Then I went to the Honda site and entered the vin#, etc. I got the correct code, used it after disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, and it worked! The Honda dealer evidently accidently swapped the correct card for the one I have...

I just had this situation with a 2002 Honda CR-V. The battery was disconnected and the battery cables shorted together for 10 minutes to clear the engine codes from memory. After reconnecting the battery the radio display showed CODE. The procedure to clear the code is detailed in other posts on this site and in the owner's manual. The one comment that I would like to add is that entering the code incorrectly (the code is located on a separate card and not in the owner's manual) 10 times does not permanently disable the radio. Why would anyone try 10 times before doing some research before entering a code you obviously don't remember? If for some reason you are that person, you will have to leave the radio on for an hour before attempting to enter the code again. (You will not be hearing any music during this time.) You must have the code, it's 5 digits long and would be next to impossible to enter at random. If the code has been lost, the only other way to get it back is from Honda, by providing the VIN number of the vehicle and the serial number of the audio system. The audio system's serial number is also on the card with the reset code. It might also be in the front of the manual if the owner wrote it down when they got the vehicle. This information is from the owner's manual. This is an easy fix if you have the code. It does not take a code scanner to do this procedure, and in fact, that won't work anyway.

The error code e has another solution other than the battery. I got pissed and ignotred it. After driving 5 miles it reset and allowed me to use the 1..... 6 .... power button result to restore the radio. Civic si 2008.

I have a different problem with my 2010 CRV radio. After having the starter replaced, I went to enter the code only to find that the #6 preset button doesn't work, and of course my code has a 6 in it?

UNLOCK WITHOUT CODE 2008 Honda Element. Had original code, but it would not work and went to ERROR CODE E. Googled and found would have to leave key in ignition for an hour with radio on or disconnect battery for 10 plus minutes. KEPT googling and found this: 1. Turn radio OFF 2. Hold down buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously for 20 seconds. 3. Turn on radio WHILE still holding buttons 1 and 6. 4. Weird scrambled codes went they a sequence then I hit radio it went ON!!!!

I had the same problem. I let the engine run for an hour and the radio reset. Then I could enter the right code. I found it on a card in the glove box. I was afraid to unplug the battery, but I didn't have to do it!

It took me quite a few attempts to get the radio number by holding down 1 and 6 but stick with it. I think I finally got it by holding them down longer. Be ready with your phone to take a picture because it’s only on the screen for a short time! I’m in Canada so the code finder web page did not work for me. It would not recognize my vehicle serial number. I just called my local Honda dealer, gave them my radio number 15579023 and he had the 5 digit code within seconds. The Honda dealers have access to a portal where they can get the code. Also had to disconnect my negative from battery post to reset after 8 failed attempts. Thanks and good luck!

I had read these post yesterday after I purchased a 2004 CR-V. The error e was there, So I went to a local dealer and they gave me the code. I had not had time to disconnect the battery, planning to do so this afternoon. Well, as I was sitting in line in the car this morning, engine off, but key still in the ignition, there was a loud beep, VERY LOUD, and the radio was suddenly asking for a code. Grabbed the one I had gotten, put it, the radio is now working fine. Absolutely no idea what prompted it to suddenly decide to come out of the error e, but it saved me s lot of extra work.

I am having trouble getting my code for the Honda from the navicode site The site asks for Zip code Here in the UK we have post codes and the site refuses to except it Also i do not know my radio code or where to find it Now not sure what to do.

If you're getting a "CODE ERROR E" message, it might indicate that an incorrect code was entered too many times. You can try resetting the radio system by disconnecting the car's battery for about 15-30 minutes. This allows any residual power to drain from the system. Make sure you have the security code ready, as you'll need it after reconnecting the battery. Read more: https://g0hwc.com/reset-car-radio-without-code/
