Transmission overheating due to diffrent size tires, and or battery?

Asked by scottsviper Feb 25, 2015 at 08:44 AM about the 2011 Jeep Patriot Latitude X 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My transmission temperature light came on a few months ago while moving from orlando to tampa. I live in florida its hot already but I have never had issues. When it happen the first time it, as a safety precaution it lower your power and you have to pull off and wait. I brought it to jeep the first time and they said nothing was wrong. I recently like this week brought it there and they said it was due to my tires being different sizes and the front more warn, and my battery had bad cold crank amps. My tires sizes are
p215 65r17 98t rear
215 65r17 99t front
would that really cause the issue or is it something else it soulds fishy to me.

i honestly cant see either of that causing your problems in my opinion. car manufacturers have to leave a leeway between tire sizes... you cant run 2 totally different size tires but they leave enough so that tread wear and low tire pressure causes minimal effect. where i would start off with is have you ever had your transmission serviced? new fluid and filter would be a good start and a flush isnt a bad idea either, atleast flush the cooler. im thinking you have insufficient flow throughout your transmission lines including the cooler. much like a rad. if the fluid doesn't flow through the rad then it doesn't cool down.

I went in to get it serviced and the guy told me it should be good through duration of the vehicles life. I chucked at that.

lol ya you should have shown him your owners manual. i know it used to be ever 100,000 miles your transmission should be serviced but now dealers are starting to change it to every 30,000 miles. every 30,000 miles you should have the fluid drained and a new filter put in. every 100,000 miles you should have it flushed.

I didnt even think of that. I will have to do that next time cause I am sure I will be back. Thank you for your reply

I just had the same problem. Did a transmission flush resolve the issue?

This is a serious issue with the Jeep Patriot. The car is defective in the heat. I have had this problem with my Jeep Patriot for the past several years, leading to thousands of dollars in repairs, none of which resolve the issue. The issue seems to be the transmission fluid, which is nearly impossible to check because it is supposed to be for the "lifetime of the vehicle" so service centers don't check it. I am considering filing a class action lawsuit, actually.

Right now, I am having the third transmission put in my Patriot. It went out at about 40000 miles and again at about 90000. The first time it went I was literally stuck 4 states away for a week and a half and we will see how long it takes this time. The dealer has no answers for me when asked what happens when the next one goes out and it is out of warrenty:(

All owners need to band together and file a law suit. I just bought a 2010 Compass from a local Honda Dealer. Was driving home, 3 hours from the dealer and the transmission started whining and a light came on the dash. Had to pull over and let sit 30 mins. The light went out but the Transmission still is whining. The dealer will fix it or I'll return the POS

Whomever stated the fluid in the jeep is the answer my opinion they are absolutely correct! my jeep patriot has 215,100 miles and has a small transmission leak in which I ALWAYS made sure I filled it. I had to travel on a hour and half trip in which I was late so I decided to drive a little faster than normal, 45 minutes into the drive the "orange" light comes on which I find later to be the transmission light. I was traveling approximately 75- 80 miles an hour then all of a sudden I lost power the Patriot dropped speed down to 40 miles an hour. Now I've had an oh crap moment.... remember in the beginning when I said, I always made sure to put fluid in.....this one time I didn't I had forgotten. A $50 dollar seal I could have killed my jeep who has been great to me. Check your fluids.

Jessica, did you file? I’d like to join the lawsuit for a class act because my car has been stalling for years with this same light in the transaxel. You should be able to drive your car long distances. I can’t drive longer than an hour and can’t drive over 70.

On the patriot with the CVT transmission, you are not able to check the fluid light at home. It requires a specific dipstick that does not come with the vehicle. When I brought it to a local shop they had to turn me away because the specific one cost over a grand and they couldn't justify purchasing it. Let me know if they file suit. It's a ridiculous problem.

Ive been having the same issue with my 2013 keeps patriot. I’ve taken it to a Jeep dealer to be looked at and they claimed it’s a safety feature and can’t be turned off in the Jeep. I’m calling bullshit. A car shouldn’t have to pull over on the side of the interstate for 15 min after driving every hour going over 60 mph. I have a 5 month old and traveling with him and stopping on the side of the road every 25-30 miles on the side of the interstate IS NOT SAFE! There needs to be a recall and I want my money back. This problem didn’t start until right after my 60,000 mike warranty that came with the car expired!

I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot and the light just came on. About a month ago I had to have the Transmission Throttle replaced. I wonder if one has something to so with the other. The 2010 has a CVT trans, the dealer said the fluid shouldn't need replacing cuz it is a sealed system. But the oil change place said I should change it.

I have a 2013 Jeep Patriot and this keeps happening more and more frequently. Just today it happened twice within 15 minutes so I pull over, put it in neutral and wait for it turn off to do the same thing 15 minutes later. Luckily I am able to get to an exit and not having to pull over on the highway but this is getting ridiculous. Glad I am not the only one having the problem.

I likewise am having the same problem with my 2012 Jeep patriot. It always happens when I’m on the highway and usually when I am trying to go in the 70 to 75 mile an hour range. My mechanic whom I trust implicitly told me that for them to get to where that fluid is to check it and replace the filter will be very expensive because it is so hard to reach, which is why I have not done anything yet, because I can’t afford what he is saying it will cost. I am really hacked about this issue. It does seem to happen more often in hot weather, although I’m not sure why. I do a lot of over the road traveling, so this is a major issue for me. I’m wondering if I should just replace the car with something else, because I certainly don’t want to pay for a new transmission when the car Is just at 100,000 miles. I never replaced a transmission on my Chevy Tahoe which made it to 296,000 miles before I traded it in!! What really upsets me is this jeep is assembled just 12 miles away from my hometown, and I can’t do anything about this issue! Except I would be interested in joining the class action suit!

Recently bought a 2014 Jeep Patriot from a local dealer, only about 80000 miles. Test drive was fine, however after driving about 40 minutes on the highway back home at about 80mph, I began to hear a whining noise come from under the hood. Car had trouble accelerating and then transmission light came on. Had to pull over and after about 20 minutes car was fine. Thought everything was okay until i did some research online and saw that a lot more people have similar issues.

I took my car to see if the fluid level was low, but it was around 32 and I think the range is 25- 45. I can't remember what he said. He also said that I should take it to a transmission shop to see if they could help me further. I have a 2013.

Same problem on our 2010 Jeep Patriot. Always in hot weather. Always going about 75-80 when the transmission light comes on and forcefully slows us to 40 and stops accelerating. Safe to drive on 2 lane CA highways at 40 mph for sure. On our way to a Dr appointment 400 miles away. Not sure if we’re going to get there.

Filing class action law suit isn't difficult. They key is to find a lawyer willing to go after Chrysler. I for example am not going to wait for class action to happen nor recall, I'm taking them (chrysler) to court myself. Small claims, $$ is $3K-$5K ( I think) Multi-billion company continues to produce garbage and naive ppl like us buy that crap so their CEOs could live like kings. I'm sick of Chrysler and orher corporations like them.

Its not necessarily a Jeep issue, its more of the transmission. A lot of CVTs have issues with overheating and premature failure. Nissan and Mazdas with CVT also have overheating issues. I took my Jeep to the dealer and mechanic recommended changing out the transmission fluid and filter at about 80000 miles. These CVTs can overheat easily during the summer when the temperature reach triple digits, especially on the highway.

My 2012 patriot has same problem , overheating transmission light goes on in hot weather on the interstate , the engine whines and it sounds like car will breakdown , I stop , it cools, but then I don't drive over 60 mph . I'm worried my transmission will be destroyed, but it sounds like there's no fix for this. Right? Has anyone gotten it fixed? If there's a lawsuit how do we join?

I'm also having this problem and I have only had the car about 2 months, its a 2012 Jeep Patriot. My check engine light came on a month after I had it and it was just the sensor needing replacing. Now I leave to the store on a rainy day n it suddenly wants to overheat...if this is a common issue like I'm seeing I also want to join a lawsuit its 100,289 miles right now.

Is anyone making this class action suit?? I have been having all of the same issues with my 2008 Patriot- anytime it is over 80 degrees out I can't drive over 60 or I will overheat in minutes and have to pull over for upwards of two hours before the light is gone. There is no reason this should happen when I drive faster than 60 mph. I don't even have 90k miles on the thing! Let me know how this is moving forward as a lawsuit because I am dumping money into my jeep right now just to get from point A to B.

This problem is probable due to insufficient cooling. An aftermarket transmission cooler would solve it.

This is the solution we've come to as well after more extensive research sitting on the side of the highway lol. Thank you for your input! I have a possible solution. At least so far it is working. I've been having the problem since 60,000 miles or so. If it was hot I would just keep the Jeep at 72 mph and it wouldn't happen. I did some reading in other forums and found a guy who said he solved the problem. He drove 800 miles to Arizona after the fix without issue. He said to change the fluid and not fill it completely. So I changed the fluid, transmission pan (I wanted one with a drain plug), gasket and filter. Then I refilled it with 7 quarts (the manual calls for 7,4 quarts.) I bought a cheap dipstick to check the fluid level and it showed slightly low. I then cautiously drove at 78 mph on a 90 degree day for 100 miles. No issues. The next week I drove 82 mph at 92 degrees with the AC on and drove 100 miles. NO issues! The guy in the other forum (can't find the link) said when the transmission fluid expanded too much (from heat) it would begin to foam and lose viscosity and the ability to cool the transmission. Then shutdown. The other forum said there is a service bulletin put out by Jeep and his mechanic found it and did what I did. Limited test bed here but maybe????

I bought a used 2008 Jeep Patriot with only 16000 miles on it August 2013. I thought I was getting a deal. Around 60,000 miles it started overheating and making that whining noise and losing power. No one could find anything wrong with it. With one more car payment due August 2018, I traded it in with 72000 miles on it. I only received $1400 for it. I will never buy a vehicle with a CVT again!! Definitely would to join a class action lawsuit.

I’m a proud owner of a 2012 Jeep Patriot which we bought brand spanking new with literally only 2 miles on it when we signed papers, and that was from my short test drive. I have loved it, zero issues until Monday afternoon driving north from Detroit, freeway driving, whining sound, pull over etc as others had to do— I was near Saginaw, pulling over to cool down until light goes off ( per manual)- fixed issue temporarily, drove another 200 miles, whining noise — drop in speed, ‘limp mode’ as I learned, had to be towed in 150 miles before a garage could touch it. I’m all about A class Law suit this is bullshit and unacceptable issue!

If your Jeep Patriot is getting hot and you see the temperature gauge reaching the 3/4 mark, stop your vehicle and let the engine temperature drop. Don't operate the vehicle beyond the 3/4 mark. If you take the vehicle to the dealership or to your mechanic and they are unable to find a leak or the problem, Try to replace the coolant temperature sensor. If the issue is related to a transmission overheat and your mechanic inform you that your transmission is okay, you can replace the transmission sensor too. The coolant sensor will cost you from $7.99 to $18.97.The transmition sensor will cost you around $20.00 to $40.00,

2014 jeep patriot.. Summer 2018.. Over heated after getting an Oil change at the dealership. ( I bought and fixed the issue. Upper radiator hose was cracked.) All maintenance has been kept up on an gone through thw dealership. Again summer 2018.. Had to buy a new battery.. 3rd battery in 3 years.. So a battery a year.. Current issue.. Got the Oil changed 3 months ago.. Now when I go to accelerate theres a random knocking sound from 35mph an up. Only time it doesnt knock is after ive gained speed and put cruise control on. Cant go up hills what so ever, rmps hit 4-5.5 and still wont shift speed drops to 40- 50mph (tried going to South Lake Tahoe didnt even make it out of Folsom CA). Early mornings, the jeep kicks does it once or twice then doesnt do it anymore for the rest of the day. 2 nights ago completely stalled on the hwy. Mind you im going 70mph middle lane everything dies. No power no lights blinkers nothing. Slowly made my way over to the side put the jeep in park and waited about 10min started it an it was fine. Worst f****** thing to happen while its pouring down. (I live in Sacramento CA). Checked all fluids, fluids are fine. Oil is fine. Transmission fluid is fine. Anyone have any idea whats up?? Took it down to the Dealership they topped off all fluids and sent me on my way, after saying they couldn't find anything wrong. Smh

The transmission light in my 2013 Jeep Patriot has now come on twice with the whining and loss of power following episodes where I was going around 75. The first time was around 89,000; today 105,000. I was able to drive two miles on the shoulder at 40 mph to the nearest gas station, wait 15-20 minutes, and drive on in. I’d join a class action suit...this is nuts.

County me in on this lawsuit if it ever happens. I own 2009 patriot, I was riding about 75- 80 on the interstate and my light transmission came on, pulled over for 30 minutes and was fine. Now I get skipping and was told that's how the cvt transmission runs. I'm not sure heat has anything to do with it since I live in Buffalo New York and was driving home from Mt. Pocono, P.A. in March of this year, maybe 45-50 degrees out.

Transmission light is coming on in my sons 2009 patriot. We’ve been having this issue so we drained fluid, put new fluid in, plus filter. Worked ok for about 3 trips back and forth to school and home and the fourth trip, light came back on!!! So we decided to add a extra cooler. Worked on his trip home but he drove about 2hrs to visit a friend and light came on!!! This is really upsetting knowing my son has to sit on the side of the road and wait for it to cool down. Really like the car but it might be time to let it go. Has 120,000 on it. This should be a easy fix. Can someone tell me where the trans temp sensor is located? Gonna try that and if that doesn’t fix I’m done with this POS

Drain 1/2 quart of transmission fluid out. The problem has stopped for me by doing what you did plus that. As the fluid heats it expands and when it get too full it foams and light comes on. 1 year without the issue after doing this. They make siphons you can get on Amazon.

That’s crazy that can be the issue!!! Ok my son comes home in 2 weeks from school and I’m sure the light will come on but when he makes it back, I will take out 1/2 quart When we changed fluid, I put 7.5 quarts back in because I saw a video where someone did that‍♂️ Lol I hate taking things to a dealer, I feel I can fix my own but we have chased this issue to long! Thanks again

My son has a 2009 Liberty. Trans overheated and he had to stop several times. Got it back home he replaced the filters (2 of them) and replaced the fluid. Still had problem. He managed to get it home driving slowly (500 miles). We blew out the trans cooler in the radiator. We then found a post that said perhaps there was too much fluid in the trans. That was the problem TOO MUCH TRANS FLUID. He drained out about 2 quarts. Had to buy the dipstick and set fluid to the lower half of the OK zone. Car drove to Florida packed to the gills from NJ no problems. From what I read seems too much fluid causes the fluid to foam and then lose viscosity and cause overheating. YMMV but it worked for him. I definitely want to join in on this lawsuit. At this point, it's putting all of us in danger whether it causes you slow down or pull over on the highway This is happened to me more times than I can count, living in Texas. I have a 2010 with 79,000 miles. Usually I just replace the coolant fluid and everything is OK. I've been checking the coolant religiously. However today this happened AGAIN and it's only 77 degrees outside! I pulled over and discovered the coolant was completely full. I've taken to several shops, paid almost a grand in "repairs". This is ridiculous! No wonder the company was sold to Fiat

Count me in on this lawsuit if it happens. This has happened on my 2009 Patriot more times than I can remember. Bought mine new as well. It always happens when you're going around 70 miles per hour (the speed limit on interstates in many parts of Ohio) for an extended period of time. Most recently happened last Friday when my son was driving back from school 2 1/2 hours away....didn't get an hour out of Columbus, OH Temp was around 70 degrees so it wasn't a super hot day. Have taken it to the dealer and received the same response: no code means there's no problem and it was made that way to "Protect" the mechanisms. Well in my view the only thing that it "protects" is Chrysler since I have a lifetime warranty on the powertrain

Please add me to the suit as well, we have been dealing with transmissions issues for years with my 2013 Jeep Patriot. I went right back to the dealership and they couldn’t replicate and kept telling me it was fine. The Jeep dealer put a transmission cooler on my 2013 Jeep patriot and it did not resolve the problem. I gave the car to my son and he moved from NY to Texas, The problem got worse in Texas and he could not drive more than 55 MPH and 40 minutes with out it over heating. We replaced the transmission cooler with a larger high performance transmission cooler which cost around 37 dollars plus a friend installed it for a 100 dollars. Since the install he has been able to take 4 separate 4 plus hour trips at around 75 mph with out any over heating issues.

After doing a ton of research and ending up stranded in another state, having to cancel our family trip that time, we finally found a fix. Apparently the throttle body commonly fails in Jeep Patriots at high mileage and triggers that transmission light due to an inability to accelerate. Which, of course, is misleading because the only thing in the manual about that light points to the things we've all tried that doesn't work. We replaced the throttle body and haven't had the problem since (It's been months). Hope this helps someone else.

Today, while taking my 78 year old, diabetic dad to the doctor an hour away and on the way back in my 2014 Jeep Patriot, the transmission temperature light comes on. Could not pull off the interstate due to debris with 2 semis barreling down on us while it slowed me down to 30 mph!!! I barely got off in time and made it to the off ramp to get my dad inside of a gas station with AC while I rested my Jeep. I took it to my dealership for the 4th time with the same issue!!!! It only has 79,000 miles on it. The car company has to be aware of this, and they need to be sued. This is the third time it has done this to me on the interstate, and I was doing less than 65 mph, but had been driving for almost an hour. This is so dangerous!

So this entire thread appears to have started 4 years ago and after all these Jeep owner complaints, Jeep / Chrysler /Fiat is not oblivious to the problem. So where is this law suit at? Who is filing or will be? Include me in! This all sucks, the manufacturer needs to be held accountable and buck up a solution! I’m still operating my Patriot with the issue, been doing my research prior to investing $3400 to replace the tranny. Now, from what I have learned — the most discerning issue is —- there are ‘rebuilt’ tranny’s which the dealership will get straight from Jeep — Parts are available to rebuild/ fix the tranny. But I can’t believe the entire tranny would need rebuilding —- in the old days you could replace whatever the ‘gear’ or issue was *Problem is it’s just as expensive time consuming to rebuild *Anoither interstings point- parts have not been made available to off market suppliers so non-dealership mechanics to fix the problem! Bottom line: This is a critical issue, default on the part of the design engineering. Jeep Patriot Owners deserve compensation!!! Very expensive LEMON they created and continue to manufacturer and resell knowing this. My extended warranty expired September 30,2018, my problem discovered December 2018, This is not right — and we have all been screwed by Chrysler, Jeep/ Fiat !

My 2013 Jeep Patriot had the throttle problem last month. It has less than 90,000 miles. When I got stranded it had so many warning lights on. Besides replacing the throttle It also had an engine flush. Yesterday while on the freeway the transmission light went on. I quickly stopped on the side of the road and turned the car off. I have never had this problem and felt the other issues were more than enough. I thought I was buying a reliable car when I purchased my Jeep.

My stepdaughter has a 2009 Patriot and any time she drives over an hour or goes over 70mph same thing happens. She has three little kids and its HOT in Tucson AZ. Every time we change the fluid and both filter is over $150.00 on parts only I do the manual labor. Yesterday she had a lot of issues and when she got the house the transmission sound like the oil was boiling I hope this does not cause a fire because they will have a big law suit.

Same issue. I regularly drive 4 hours. At around the 3 hour mar: Temp light, whining noise, loss of power. Changed fluid and filter, helped for 1 trip. next trip I added LubeGard CVT, helped for 2 trips. Back to where I started. If there is a lawsuit, for jeep to fix it, let me know. Otherwise I'm gonna sell it, but I cant sell a lemon to someone else. laytonmdougherty@gmail.com

I have an 08 Patriot with the same transmission overheating problem. I took some time to digest the last 4 years of this thread and I read about 2 possible fixes for this problem. #1 remove about 1/2 quart of transmission fluid (or leave it 1/2 quart low after changing it) #2 install a larger after market transmission fluid cooler. Here are my thoughts.... installing a larger cooler (without adding any more fluid) is about the same thing as removing a 1/2 quart of fluid from the transmission so it seems reasonable to think removing the 1/2 quart of fluid FIRST to see if that fixes it would be a safe bet. I also did a quick inspection of the factory transmission cooler and discovered that it is built into the top 5 inches of the A/C condenser coil which is the first coil directly behind the grill. This is also the part of the coil that has been directly hammered with bugs and road grime for 11 years. I tried to shine a very bright light through it and very little light was getting through. It has a lot of bugs and road grime in it just looking at the face of it. Today when I get home from work I will power wash all the coils until they are clean like they were new (being very careful not to bend any of the fins over) and see if this will take care of the problem. It is in the 90's in southern Ohio so I will know pretty quick if this fixed it and will let you all know. If it doesn't fix it I will remove a 1/2 quart of fluid and let you all know if that fixed it also. Some additional thoughts..... the transmission getting too hot and causing the fluid to expand and foam and further complicate the whole issue COULD be a symptom and not the root cause. The root cause COULD be because the transmission cooler is full of bugs and road grime causing the symptom of the transmission overheating. This is why I want to wash all the coils very well first to see if it will fix it. I'm not suggesting removing a 1/2 quart of fluid will not stop the problem from happening but I would suggest removing the fluid may be treating the symptom and not the root cause of the problem. I would also suggest that treating the symptom in this way has not reduced the temperature of the transmission fluid whatsoever and therefore the chances of the transmission living a long happy life have been dramatically reduced. I will let you all know as I find out more.

UPDATE..... Cleaning the transmission fluid cooler helped a lot. At 90+ degrees outside you had to pull over and wait after driving 30 minutes before it was cleaned, after cleaning it you had to drive 2.5 hours at 90+ degrees outside before the light came on. I did remove a little transmission fluid to get it just above the add line. This did not help at all. Light still came on after driving 2.5 hours. All of these tests were done at 70+MPH highway driving. I hope this helps some. I'm not sure what the next step may be.

I just bought a 2008 patriot with just under 104,000. I bought it as is. Light came on for over heat light for the transmission. I live in texas, and its been in the high 90's. I did some research with the car fax. And the transmission fluid was flushed at a mom and pop shop. My research shows YOU HAVE TO USE MOPAR FUILD ! other transmission fluid cant handle the abuse. the cvt transmission heats fast and puts alot of pressure and abuse on that fluid. When i changed the tranny fluid it was red and dirty. I changed filter and put mopar fuild in. Its green by the way. Your suppose to change the oil and filter every 50,000 miles. If you pull a trailer every 30,000 miles. O changed the spark plugs, changed engine oil with royle purple 5w 20 and its running like a champ. I havent got the orange light of tranny death so far. If you dont follow the service manual your going to run into problems. I have to change the timing belt, cause thats what manual says and i dunno if it was done, and radiator fuild and jeep will be all caught up. Im getting 20.4 mpg but im shooting for 24 mpg. Transmission fluid change costs 400.00 at dealer and it cost me time and 184.00 to do it myself, and oil change was like 48. I did it myself also. Hope this helps. Theres a video on utube for 2008 pat. For changing transmission fluid. Hope this helps. God bless

I guess Jeep recently changed the transmissions so they are no longer using these CVT ones (so I’m told). Not that it helps us, but good to know. FYI Has anyone filed a suit?

My ‘research’ says the CVT, by construction, had two or more metal plates which tend to produce metal ‘shavings’ which corrupt the fluid and filter, causing the fluid to get hotter. Change the fluid every 4 months @ $40 myself, leaving it a bit lower level- haven’t had a stalling issue in 9 months.

I posted earlier in the chat room. Go to the jeep dealer or change your own transmission fueled. Put the mopar transmission fuild. And change filter. Buy an extra bottle to flush out what evers in the transmission. Its not hard. I haven't had any issuse with my light coming on. Buy only dealer parts and fuileds. Good luck

I purchased a 2010 Jeep Patriot used with 65k on it and was excited to use it to drive around the desert and explore. Shortly after purchasing it I learned that it cannot even make it a full road trip without having to pull off on the highway for 20 min. I have missed out on countless road trips as my patriot only is successful with short distances and in city traffic. I have completed a transmission flush, new oil and filter which did not work. I also upgraded the transmission cooler because the upgraded one said it superseded the original cooler part which proves that Chrysler knows there is a huge problem here. The new cooler didn’t work either, don’t waste your money. I can’t even drive up an incline for more than 3 -5 min without the light coming on. I’ve spent 3500 trying to figure this issue out and am also interested in a lawsuit if it gets started. If anyone finds a fix, please share because this is exhausting. Mikussolar@gmail.com

I have this issue with my 2011 Jeep Compass. I used to think it was because I had the AC on, but it happened again this week- on highway, about 85-90 degrees out, no AC on. Needed to get off highway and wait about 5 minutes for it to cool. No one seems to know what the issue is. About to trade it in

Looks like Jeep Patriot is built to let its owner stop on Highway... I got a used 2009 Jeep patriot ran well in Winter in Canada and in Summer when Outside temp gets above 25 Degree C Engine stops producing torque and literally reduces speed. I will try replacing Transmission fluid and fill it with only 7 Quart

if there is a lawsuit please include me..my 2013 patriot does the same thing...it chug a lugs along until i get my speed up an then after about an hr driving i have to pull over an let it cool down.. i have done all the above with nothing working mnash2394@wowway.com

my daughter hates me now. I bought a 2009 Patriot new and babied it (no offroad, etc.), then gave it to my daughter. she started having trouble last summer trying to get up to our cottage (mid- Michigan). I replaced the fluid w/ the correct fluid, and the OEM filter. seemed to work for one trip, however she called yesterday on the way up saying she was stranded and yelling at me because i told her i fixed it. thanks D/F/C. where is the recall/lawsuit - we are in.

I have the same problem on my 2009 Patriot. @Joe did the aftermarket performance transmission cooler work? I've tried changing the transmission fluid and filters, and it only worked for a few months before the problem came back. Mine started around 100k and still persists today. I can only do short trips in the summer time because I live in Texas.

2009 Patriot Canada winter weather and the transmission light came on. Driving just over an hour around 100km/h now pulling over every 10 minutes to let it cool. Just want to get home. Not impressed. Is the lawsuit happening or any suggestions just to get home?

I have been working of late as the lead diagnostician for a transmission chain. Prior to that I was lead diagnostician/foreman for a 13 bay shop for engine performance and driveability. My job(s) have always been to find problems when others cant or surrender trying. These Jeeps have Nissan Jatco CVT transmissions. They are poor transmissions. They fail often. However, its not enough to say ITS USUALLY THIS or TRY THAT. You need to know what is happening. The Trans Overheat light comes on at 263 degrees. Not 262 or less. 263 is raging hot. Its not quite meltdown level, but its not far from it. If you pull over and idle in gear without shuttong it off, usually that will allow a 15 or 20 degree cooldown. These transmissions have fluid issues, flow issues, cooler issues and they just run kinda warm even when new and perfect. They EITHER have a fluid cooler that is integral with the trans and covers the filter, OR they have one in the condenser/grill with a line adapter covering the filter. Fluid is soso. It does not last 100000 miles. No fluid does. it should be changed every 25000, and most chrysler transmissions of the past 25 years needed a 25k service interval. If that has been missed by 10 or 15k or more, the fluid is likely losing its integrity. Worn fluid still shifts the gears, but it does not lubricate or cool well anymore,. Those jobs are trans lifespan controllers! If you have no other codes (yet) and it only acts up after extended high speed/rpm operation but its always OK around town...Here is what I recommend. CHANGE FLUIF AND FILTER CARTRIDGE. Use only OE or approved replacement synthetic fluid. While doing this, have the trans cooler FLUSHED. not blown out for 3 seconds with compressed air. Have it FLUSHED with cleaner.. any reputable shop or transmission repair facility CAN do a proper flush as opposed to a cheapie (BLOWING AIR OR TRANS FLUID THROUGH FOR 2 OR 3 SECONDS). On top of those 2, add an ADDITIONAL external cooler in the grill. If yours has the cooler attatched to the transmission, youll need to buy the adapter from the dealer, if you have the condenser mount cooler, remove the output line from the cooler that takes the cooled fluid back to the trans. Divert the hose to an additional cooler (Hopefully larger and heavier duty) for additional cooling. (The tall fitting on the trans side of the hose is the output, its also the lower one) You will have to BUY this cooler somewhere. I dont work for any cooler companies, I wont recomment any, cheap ones are fine, expensive ones may be 10 or 20% better and cost 5x as much. Just more tube, more fluid, more cooling fins. Keep the temp under 225 degrees (Preferably under 200!) and you will never have to worrk and your trans will last much much longer. If its running 225 to 260, youll never see the light but your transw will likely eat itself long before 100,000 miles. If you are seeing the light, and you are one who doesnt have time to stop when it comes on and wait 30 minutes for it to cool, Your on borrowed time, trans WILL fail. Its what will happen... Listen or not, tell me stories about what and why or about your cousins truck or what your mechanic said... I teach other masters, and Im hoping to teach some of you if you choose to listen,. I havent checked ANY of your individual vehicles...so odd 1 in a million weirdness is always a possibility. But I am here to say with experience and multiple tests and fix experiments and causality checks... These transmissions (and all transmissions for that matter ) NEED to stay cool, and if they are too hot...either something is broken (cooler, low fluid, Pressure regulator, pump, etc) or soon something else much more expensive will be damaged. Trans Temps are visible in the enhanced section of chrysler transmission data. a generic OBD2 tool may or may not show trans temp. enhanced tools like SnapOn or Autel or launch, or even phone based programs like TORQUE can do it. check before piurchasing a tool. Hope it helps and to the original poster: NO, your tires being letter mismatched did not set your trans temp light. Nor did the battery. Transmission coolers CAN plug up (Its more common than people think). Plugged trans filter (Also more common than people think) is the same as a cooler being plugged or having low fluid. it restricts flow of lubricant. Metal on coolers heats and cools thousands of times. It eventually losed conductivity for heat as it begins to expand and contract less causing less heat transfer. Its not leaking or broken, its just old and not as efficient as when new and never will be. This sort of metal fail happens on fin based coolers that are over 10 or 15 years old typically and its real, but less likely for the majority of vehicles here however I wouldnt rule it out without testing. a cooler should knock 50 degrees off temp. if its less than 30 its BAD.. if its over 50...great...you have a good one. 50 is normal, 40 is even OKish if you dont town stuff up hills. 2nd cooler will never be bad. It will only help (If properly installed,)

Thank you Kelly! This all makes sense to me. I did change the fluid/filter last year (Q1/2020) and it was fine for a while. I checked and it looks like adding an additional cooler is possible, and they are about $60 so not too expensive. Also - there seems to be a fluid cooler bolted to the engine which looks like a medium sized canister heat sink - see attached- any thought on that?

I just had the same issue after changing the ac condenser for a cheap aftermarket one, I didn't realize that the ac condenser also serves as the trans cooler that cools your transmission fluid so buying a cheap aftermarket could have just cost me a new transmission! I am hoping that I can buy a new oem Mopar condenser and replace the trans cooler hoses and replace the transmission fluid and might as well change the filters for the transmission while doing all of this and I found out there are 2 filters one in the transmission pan and a external filter located somewhere under the battery area...I hope and pray that me loosing alot of the trans fluid didn't cause any major damage to my Patriot. I heard the motor making a whinning noise and the rpms started accelerating on it's on but I was only 2 miles from my house so I decided not to stop and arriving at my house is when I noticed a leak of red fluid pouring from my truck and I shut it off real quick and the next day is when I noticed that the trans cooler hose that goes to the ac condenser had completely came disconnected! But no lights on the dash ever came on ain't that some shit?
