Transmission light came on and car slowed to 40 mi?

My 2008 Jeep Patriots transmission light
came on today had never done this, but I was
driving 65-75 temp was 100, car slowed to 40
and started whining

Most likely the transmission is on its way out, typical Jeep, mine went at 80000 miles.
