2011 Silverado Oil Pressure Indicator?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have 80,000 miles on my truck. Have conducted regular maintenance on it
and always changed the oil every 4000-5000 miles with synthetic. As I got off
the highway today my low engine oil pressure/shut engine off  warning came
on. I parked my truck, checked under the hood and under the engine for
leaking oil, saw none. My dipstick was a little low, but I am at the end of my
5000 and due for an oil change.  Waited 30 minutes and started it up and
drove around, pressure seemed fine right around 40, and increased when I
gave it gas. I have read about the pressure sending unit going bad mainly on
the 2007 models, which I'm sure could be a possibility with me.

My fear is that the gaskets and all that are worn out and someone is going to
try and tell me I need a new engine.  If this were actually the case, would my
pressure be okay after restarting and running the way it did? Really hoping I
just need to replace the pressure sending unit. If my engine has gone bad at
80,000 miles I will be raising hell. Thanks for any help.

No definitely not a bad motor, Its a Chevy. Your talking in the right area of your problem. There is a screen basket under the oil sending unit that will collect contaminates plugging the flow of pressure to the oil pressure sending unit. Common problem. Take out the oil pressure switch and fish out the screen & clean. While you are there might as well replace the oil pressure sending unit.

Rowefast, thanks for the help, that is a big relief. I'm guessing this means it is okay to drive in this condition? I plan on fixing it in a few days but have to commute to and from work for a few days before I can get to it.

Your motor is fine as long as it is not knocking or ticking...Just pay attention to it, stop if you hear noise...

I think it needs to be mentioned, oil leaks and oil pressure have little to due with each other.

Andrew, were in the world do you pick up on a oil leak?

Rowefast and Mark, the leak mention is my fault. In my world of the oil pipeline business, low pressure has everything to do with a possible leak. So I thought the two could be linked, plus I read some mentions of it on the internet somewhere.
