my 3oom when reaches 40 miles per hour will not change to the next gear, what could cause that, just started today 7/25/12

Yes, but when it suppose to goto fourth the engines rev up but doesnt change, sound like it is stuck and will not increase its speed

I would check transmission fluid level and the filter. If those are good I would hook up to a code reader and check for any codes.
