2012 VW CC Sport burning thru A LOT of gas in gridlock.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought a '12 CC Sport (4 door) 2.0. Filled the
tank with 93 octane and got a range of 550 miles.
After driving 78, I got caught in gridlock. It lasted
20 minutes and went approximately 1.5 miles. My
range dropped to 380. What the @#$&? The
manual gas gauge is showing I am down ~¼ tank.
Is that normal? I haven't gotten the emissions
inspection yet (concerned it's going to fail at this
point), so I'm wondering if there's an inefficient
burn going on during idle somehow? Is that even
possible? Thoughts? Suggestions? Going to get an
add-in engine cleaner for the next time I add gas,
but until then.....?

But 120 miles worth of a range in 20 minutes? That's beyond excessive. I've lived here and sat in gridlocked traffic my whole life and never saw gas drain like that on idle.
