2012 VW CC 2.0tsi not starting

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 VW CC sport. It has had a front and rear end collision and as a result its had a drain on the battery for some time now. Not usually that big of a issue, just a quick jump would get it going. Not anymore. While trying to jump it one day it all of a sudden just started whirring but not engaging the flywheel. Initial thought was somehow burned out starter solenoid. Got the starter off and charged the battery and while having everything in the shop decided to do a bench test on the starter just to see. It seemed to work just fine. So i reinstalled everything and tried to give it a go and again just whirring but no engaging.  All connections and cables seem to be clean and fine. Dont have alot of room in the pocketbook to fix parts that dont need it so was wondering which i should replace? Starter or battery? And why would the starter appear to work fine on a bench test but not in the car? Any advice and help on this issue would be phenomenally appreciated. Car has been idle for 3 months now due to finances and this issue. Please help.

Did you check the starter drive itself? I've seen some starters that the internal clutch of the drive just fails, and the gear can be turned either way instead of locking in.

No but will ne pulling the battery out to charge it and the starter to re test it today. Will check it then. Will keep you posted. Thanks

Did you have someone look at the engine while you were cranking? I had one that the timing belt broke and bent all the valves. When you cranked it it made a whirring noise like a spinning starter but the engine was in fact turning.

Shit. Pardon my language, but no i didnt and thats exactly what is happening. And the starter is bench testing fine (as far as i can tell). Was hoping to take it to autozone to have them check it but will see if my wife will look to see when i try to start it if the engine is moving.
