Cruise control turns off by itself

Have issue with Cruise. Engage and
then a few minutes later the light goes
out shutting down the cruise. Won't
come back on unless shutting off
ignition and restarting. Been to two
dealers who only hook up to computer
and tell me no codes.

Same. Would always engage but suffered intermittent dropout and/or failing to resume following brake application or pushing cancel, though was able to re-engage. Checks thus far show good vacuum to servo with good check valve at brake booster, good brake lighting on and off. No indication problem has to do with the steering wheel controls. Sudden worsening this week- got to where once it drops out will not re-engage until next trip- "cruise" light not coming back on. Then all day not coming on at all. Then the next day it worked 100% perfectly all day as I put it through all paces. Now today it's back to coming on for just a little while and then dropping out and not being able to be reactivated.
Tried replacing the brake switch but the one I ordered didn't fit, and every other one I looked at was the same, the activation plunger was twice as long as the original in the car. After a LOT of digging I discovered that the darn thing is apparently designed to be installed looking for all the world like it's a bad fit that's leaving your pedal pushed down and the brake lights stuck on, which IS the case, until...you pull back on the pedal with just enough force to *SNAP* the plunger back into the switch housing, reducing its extended length back to that of the original and all working well. Have no Idea on this other than maybe they're cheaping out by putting out a single part for different fitments and then torturing us who need it shorter with a lack of information. That it's something crucial like the brake light switch makes it all the more disturbing. Anyway, it FIXED MY CRUISE! Apparently there's a circuit in it designed to activate with very light pedal touch ahead of the point where the brake lights would activate, I guess to let the cruise know to disengage without necessarily making the brake lights come on. Cruise must have been getting intermittent activation signal from the switch without any touching of the pedal.
