Did some brake pads used to have sensors on the side and now do not

No,there is what is called a sqealer, that lets you know the brakes need changing and are wore out,and some after market brakes do not have this.

Agreed. It's not an electrical sensor on older cars, I call it a 'sounding tab' that causes a squeal by rubbing on rotors before pad rivets dig in to rotor. I know of no such thing on drum brakes though

That's great I have been looking for pads with this thing on the side and of course its not necessary, so can I snap it off and drive the car while Im waiting for the new pads

You can break the tab,but don,t run them long,will damage the rotors,
