My friend has a 2001 Mustang GT, and the past 5 or 6 years, giant patches or paint have been chipping from everywhere in the hood, and the plastic hood scoop is a faded color. Any ideas of why this happens? Maybe a poor paint job?

Just wondering WHY your friend has been driving around in the Mustang for the past 5-6 years with "giant patches of paint chipping from the hood"? Surprised he/she hasn't had a re-paint job by now. Well...it IS a 10+ year old car ..add the fact the Quality is NO longer Job#1 at Ford = probably a so-so paint job when it was being built and there you are. Suggest a good paint job (if your friend is going to be keeping it for awhile) or just a Maaco inexpensive re-do on the paint, if they are going to be offloading the car in the near future.

The 2001 Mustang has a composite hood and not a steel hood. If the hood was ever repainted, the repair shop may have used the same chemicals to prepare the hood as a steel hood thus causing the paint not to adhere properly.
You guys forgot to mention how people LOVE to use a buffer on clear coat paint jobs and burn them off! It's an old car. Paint it or get used to it.
