The answer is Yes Turn if OFF. What the manual says, a mountain pass is 'hilly' Allow your engine to run at 3000 - 3500 rpm, or even faster (I don't know what the red-line is in your car but don't keep it at that) when going up or down a steep hill. If not, it may lug a bit, and that's not good. Then put it back in O/D on level or mild grade. If you are going downhill and find you are riding brakes to keep from speeding, kick it out and let engine help maintain downhill speed

http://www.mustangspecs.com/years/05.shtml spec say the 4.6L- V8 has a red line of 6250 rpm for the SOHC 3-valve.....and 6100 for the 6.0 - V6. Running it @ 4000+ rpm is just fine

I live in the mountains and drive to the "big City" often and there are some pretty steep grades, and I run my Toyota @ 3800 - 4000 for long stretches. Never a problem. And I have a typo up there, 4.0 V6 not 6.0
