Coil pack question
Asked by Willymac2476 Dec 22, 2015 at 03:14 PM about the 2008 Ford F-150 King Ranch SuperCrew LB 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have to replace #3 cylinder coil pack and the
original coil packs have the brown boots(8l3e). #4
and #8 cops have the black boots (3l3e). I am
buying all 8 coil packs to replace them all and was
wondering (since the brown boots are so much
more expensive) if the black boots would work in
it?

Color does not matter. If it were me I would only replace the bad one but in any case save the ones that are good in case you need one in the future. Having an extra coil around is always a good idea when you have a Ford Triton.
The next time I need to replace a coil I am going to get these --

OK so the brown coils (dg521) and black coils (dg511) are interchangeable then? I'm going to save them no doubt!
I don't know that part number but all you have to do is replace the bad one unless you want to spend more.
Boots n plugs boots n plugs..... I hear club music.

Thanks all...will let ya know how they work out for me
My truck has brown boots on coil packs, I bought new ones and they came with black boots. When I compared, the black ones are 1/2 in shorter than the brown ones. This concerns me if the spring will engage the spark plug enough or not. Thoughts?

Halfway in 2008 they changed from brown boots to black boots. You can't use mix match coils wrong length and connector won't work

Put 1and 3 you n now it what start what could have happen
They do have 2 different lengths they switched on the 05 model some have the old style some have the new and change ALL coils or u will have one of the old ones die every other week
What color coil pack boot does a f150 5.4 have

2008-2010 are the new style plugs with threads all the way to the end. If your F 150 has these plugs (COPS) use the Brown (Longer) Boots only. However a black DOES connect and will work. But I suggest you use the Brown they are longer and do connect better and are built for the new plugs. The long plugs with smooth lower portion take the black plugs (COPS). and depending on the year could be short ones. 1997-2003 usually short plugs (Cops) But 2004-2007 half way thru year are long smooth lower portion and use black Boots (COPS) just to clear up some of the misinformation above. The Brown boots on the 2008 and half year 2007 and UP are longer ad insulate the plug better from early failure. 90-100K is the recommended change cycle. I do mine up at 50-60 K cause you will usually see a mileage drop and acceleration diminish around that mileage. And depending on your maintenance , and work load. SP 509 threaded to the end uses DG521 Plug wires, the SP515 uses the DG 511 Wire but it will work on both plugs but both plugs will NOT work in either vehicle. USE the specs I have listed above for your best results.

I know this is an older thread but I just ran into the same issue, and yall need to know that not only is there a .5" difference in length, but a significant markup in price ass well... HOWEVER. you can pull the brown boots off of your old packs and re-use them on the new packs, assuming they are in decent shape still. I have an '08 Triton supercrew and just went thru this, it works just the same, and the new leftover black boot works great as a plug retrieval tool if you cant find your friggin booted 9/16 plug socket At the very least I Hope this helps the next poor sumbitch that suffers from the curse of the unholy Ford Triton V8.. Good luck and godspeed gentlemen .
Well I got one for u guys I bought a f150 2010 with 5.4 3v engine and it was making a bad knocking noise and I changed everything in the timming then it was still makeing the knocking noise I changed cam phasers lifters rockers and still was making the noise then I heard it could be the plugs and guess what I found the passenger had the old style of plugs in it so I went to change the driver side and it was the new style of plugs and I found out it had two different heads in it one from an 08 and one from 09 so can anybody tell me what happens when u put two different heads in a motor and yes it still dont run right and I bought it from a local dealer like that they give me a warranty 1yr or 12000 mile and it quit working after 14000 and hasn't run right sence .

I have a 2008 F350 5.4L that was early 2007 mfg. (5/2007) It has the black boots. Now when I change to the updated 1 piece plug SP546 should I get the brown boots? You said the black will work but rather get whats best.
