Check Engine Code Meaning? (2009 Mini Cooper R57)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
After I topped off the oil on my car--the dealer told me Mini's are known for
burning oil, so I add about a quart a month--my check engine light came on. I
had the codes read on my 2009 Mini R57 with a Bosch Advanced OBD
scanner. I think the codes might be manufacturer specific as I can't find them
online (there's no letter in the codes): "12098 Engine Exhaust Heater Control,
Signal" and "10038 DMTL Engine Error, Signal" What might be wrong? Is it
safe to reset the codes and drive the car to see if the check engine light comes
back on, or might I really mess up my engine/car?

Clear the codes, Never chase an intermittent code, young mechanics spend hours trying to find codes that aren't there.
Mike, just to clarify: The check engine light has remained on since coming on, does this qualify as an intermittent code, and is therefore ok to clear and drive to see if it comes back on?
Yes, the lite will trip on as soon as it sees a problem, if the problem goes away the light will remain on to give the mechanic a hint as to where to locate a problem, so you're doing it as it should be done. You won't hurt anything
2009 mini cooper S code 2bd3 and 2BD4. Any idea what's that mean. Thanks.
i have a 2011 non turbo, with a P0302 cylinder 2 misfire detected code. can you explain what this is?
We have 2009 Clubman that was running rough. Now it won't start. My husband replaced the crank shaft position sensor and it still won't start. Anyone have any thought?
