I am trying to figure out what caused the damage to this piston and head. I
also found little pieces of metal in the intake plenum. not sure what they are
either? Valves, rockers, springs, rods all look okay.

is the plug gap/s closed??? how long has it sat without starting? did you ever here knocking///pre. ign !
the plug gap is not closed. It was driven every day. The only knocking was when it died.
piston matches the head damage.

it is a valve seat, probably got the engine too hot and as it expanded the seat dropped and got broken up. That is what happened to mine.
