Really Bad Gas Mileage

Asked by guru4u Dec 09, 2013 at 12:43 PM about the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: General

I knew an 06 GC Laredo with a V8 and 4wd would suck gas, but this is far worse than I thought.  I'm looking to do everything reasonable to improve this situation.  Don't drive a bunch, can live with the problem, but I want to cry watching the gas gauge.   Ideas please.  About time for new plugs/tune-up.  Already did tires.  Using thin, synthetic oil (live in Gulf Coast).  Drive like an old man most of the time.

I have an 04 GC Laredo, 165K miles. Drove it for 10 yrs at 20 MPG. A few months ago it dropped to 16 MPG within a day. After $1300 in tune-ups, diagnostics, new plugs. fuel additives there is no change. The Jeep dealership has no idea why. They just say "trade it in".
