how to check oil change indictor

about three months the oil change indictor stop coming on after 3500. I have reset it several times. The question is does it work on mileage only, or does it take any other factors, like temp, conditions driven in. Dealer wants $145.00 to check only.

The car computes the oil change interval based on how you drive and the miles. Much better to just change it every 5,000 miles.
