I just bought a Audi A6 2.8 quattro with 170,000 on it. Dirt cheap. Only $3600. Runs good and fast (except) a little loud, radio is locked (says "safe") and the check engine light refuses to go off even after servicing. Was told she could make it to 250,000 (with proper maintenance & servicing). It's a nice enough car to throw a new (or rebuilt) engine or tranny in it after that. But hey, I'm not a mechanic.

Congratulations on your purchase. With proper maintenance and use your car should last you past 250K miles. Lots of people have done that. Your radio needs to be returned to service. Apparently the battery was replaced or the radio removed with the proper code. If you do not have the radio code any dealer should be able to recover the code thru the VIN number of the car. If not, replace the radio. The check engine light is a function of many things. Servicing is not one of them. There is a machine that can read the code or codes that are causing the light to be ON. Many shops now have access to these codes and what the mean. Ignoring this light can cause serious problems later one. I would have this resolved immediately and for your next car purchase, do not buy any vehicle with the Check Engine light ON. Double check the service history of the car and make sure all proper servicing has been done or have it done. One main thing are the brakes. The brake fluid needs to be replaced according to Audi specs as well as pads and rotors replaced as needed. Brakes can be easily ignored and that can prove to be fatal. Have them checked also. Enjoy the car!

I bought a 2001 A6 Avent with 160k on clock. You should find the unlock code on owner manual. I unlock the safe mode with the code myself. Also, I did have the check engine light on shortly after the purchase, I brought the car to the local dealer and found the oxygen sensor was out of order. Replaced it and the car is running wonderfully. Plus, I did replace the alternator as well. I look forward to reach 250k before my next car.
