how do i buy a car out of state?

Question type: General
How do I know the seller is not running a scam? Is there a way to protect
myself. I have a car i found on Carguru by private seller and want to continue
with a purchase. I am concerned as the seller now took down the car from the
site and contacted me via email. do I hire an attorney in that state for a car
broker there to broker this deal?

My car is audi a6 2.8 quattro, it doesn't engage with 3rd and 4th gear
I am not sure how this reply is even close to what I am talking about?
Trust your gut. If you don't feel good about buying a car in another state, there is a good reason for this.
I've bought a vehicle long distance. First and foremost have the vehicle inspected by a professional inspection company. I've used lemonsquad.com with excellent results! Their inspection costs about $170. When you decide to buy the vehicle and you have agreed on a price, send the seller a certified check for the purchase price. Once the check clears their bank they will release the vehicle and the title. Since this is a private person you will have to title, register, and insure the vehicle in your home State before going to pick it up. If you're having the vehicle shipped to you it's wise to do this before the vehicle is picked up. When you hire a shipping company you want an enclosed car carrier and you want your vehicle on top tier position on the carrier! Your vehicle will be on the carrier with other vehicles. These other vehicles may be leaking fluids and you don't want them leaking on your vehicle! Keep all emails and text messages between you and the seller until you have the vehicle in your possession!! This way if anything does happen, you can prove, in a court of law, that you and the seller had a deal and what terms of the deal were! Also, keep in mind, if something does happen you have to go to the seller's municipality to file a complaint and go back again to court! Personally I'd rather buy long distance from a Dealer than a private person. Although I have done both and had no problems! Hope that helps! Jim
I bought a car semi-long distance through CarGurus, it was 3 hours away. I liked what I saw, it was fairly low miles (70k, 15 years old), price was at high Kelly Blue Book, the seller thought I was BS'ing him when I asked for an out the door price, his FINAL out the door price, he said I'd need to come and fill out a purchase order. I asked him to send a P.O. to my credit Union (after I said I can agree with that price), i had already spoken to them and I was approved. He sent it then asked me for a deposit, I said, "Why? We have a Purchase Order." He said OK to that. We took the train to Los Angeles, I had the check from the credit union in my pocket. I asked him to put it up on a lift for me to get under it, since it was a car that is prone to being abused (Cadillac CTS-V, V8, 6 speed manual trans), and the shop right behind his shop put it up. It was untouched, absolutely stock, and I said, "Let's do this!". When I test drove it, it had a rumble in the right front, I was thinking out of balance tire/wheel. After driving it home, I balanced the tires, rotated the tires/wheels, it still rumbled, I balanced the tires again, still shook, then replaced the right front hub and wheel bearing, and that was the fix, wheel bearing was going away, and they're built into the hub, you have to replace the whole thing, but it was still only about $100 for a hub assy and I installed it myself. It was a painless, trouble free transaction. The guy didn't BS me at all, and I believe I got a fair deal (Thanks Raffi at United Auto Group in Pasadena), I'd do it again. But I was ready to walk away with that check if things seemed hinky at all. Be careful, do your homework and inspection, don't get all caught up in having that exact car, protect your assets, and if something isn't right, tell him to eat sh!t and walk away. They won't hose you if you don't let them.
Thank you for your responses, at least some of them...lol So there is no service like a broker anyone is aware of that would protect a long distant car purchase. I am not sure of some of these answers as they have nothing to do with my original post. Some do resemble a long distant purchase but do not address the if there is some kind of service available to broker a deal so as to protect the buyer and / or seller.
That I know of, only if you buy through Ebay. Then you have the Ebay Money Back Guarantee. You get what you bought or you get your money back. Hope that helps! Jim
@Ed92626, Oooohhhh, 70 SS454. That was my favorite car of all time, 2 of my friends have totally restored ones, an LS6 and an LS5. But, those are between $35 and $100k, out of my wage range. Then I drove a late model, supercharged CTS-V. They are SO MUCH FASTER than an old SS that is anywhere near stock, that it's not funny. One thing I noticed when I drove the blown one, if you turn off the traction control, they have (I can't believe I'm saying this) TOO MUCH POWER. The one I drove was the 556hp version. The later ones have 640hp. I didn't know at the time they built a few years that weren't blown, LS6 Corvette Z06 engine and trans, 400hp. It took 3 years to find the right one. Sorry Micheal, off on a Tangent. I know there are services that will go check out a car for you, for a price. But I seriously doubt that they could be held liable if they check out your car, gives you a thumbs up, and it eats a transmission on your way back (It's a used car. Only a new car will have that kind of warranty), but maybe you can purchase a warranty through a third party company, but it's getting more and more expensive when you start adding all these things on top of your purchase price. Have you spoken to the seller? You said he took the car down. If it was me, I'd speak to the guy, get a feel for what he's doing (some people are pretty hinky, won't talk on the phone or trying to bullshit you, it really pays to to know the vehicle you're wanting, as far as details go, I tend to obsess on whatever it is I'm wanting, and get all the info I can on it. And if it seems like he's trying to bullshit you about anything, walk away. They made thousands of every model. His isn't the only one). As I wrote earlier, they won't screw you if you don't let them.
