What ground wire is shorting?

cranking amps for a 02 vw jetta 1.8 turbo is not
charging my battery in fact it's charge goes down
rapidly when car on nothing plugged in and it's not
the altinater

your alternator needs new brushes or the belt is sliping. The belt can slip if your ac pump gets seized as well. If you have over 200k km on it then you likely need the brushes(voltage regulator) replaced. its about 150$ for it and most shops can do it easy. I would jsut take it out and bring it to a rebuild shop and have all new brushes and bearings installed. Its best to keep all original parts when you can.
