HARD TO TURN IN 4WD

Asked by KJGCT1 Feb 07, 2016 at 08:51 PM about the 2005 Dodge Dakota SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I PURCHASED MY '05 DAKOTA IN 2012 WITH 28K MILES FROM MY NEIGHBOR WHO WAS SICK. IT WAS NEVER IN 4WD UNTIL I MOVED NORTH TO CT THIS SUMMER. I PUT IT IN 4WD IN THE SNOW, MY PROBLEM IS THAT THE TRUCK IS VERY HARD TO STEER IN 4WD WHEN TURNING SHARP, LIKE TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE. IF YOU TURN IN AT 10MPH AND LET OFF THE GAS THE TRUCK WILL STOP IMMEDIA-
TLY.  I OWNED A JEEP, A JIMMY, AND THEY NEVER DID THIS. WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

this might be the "king-pin" front suspension..these can get a bit squirrely if not lubricated periodically~ may have to replace the king-pin bushings~ to make your steering under control~

Don't drive the truck on dry pavement in 4wd! What your truck is doing is normal. Your Jeep may have been AWD which can be driven on dry pavement.

In 4wd the front and rear axles turn at different rates when turning and the sharper the turn the bigger the difference. Tires have to slip in order to turn which they can't do on dry pavement. If the truck is binding up then you need to go to 2wd for those turns.

'shoes...dude has been doin' this for 53,875 points...quite impressive~ I paint now...and Lisa said that I have to paint instead of tryin' to be a carguru...but I like to help people....if I am able to~ great that you are still here~ I am "not really" here~

DAVE Hutchison H25 Died last week...he was my good friend...I sent him a case of Nueske bacon...and a painting, that he asked for...don't know if he ever got to eat the bacon or review this painting~ but enjoy...I know one tire is bigger than the other...it's a matter of mood and interpretation~
