Am I OK to drive my Jetta to the dealer to get a "Low Oil Pressure" warning light checked out?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I don't want to wreck the engine. It's a '12 Jetta SE. The red "low oil pressure
light" came on, the warning tone sounded, and then the light went off again.
It's about 13 miles to the dealer.

If it was mine I would drive it. Unless you have AAA towing or something, AND the red light is NOT on. I hesitate to say this, you ruin your engine by driving it, but like I say I would. But make an appointment with the dealer first. You don't need to get stuck in a position that they are busy and can't get to it, and have to leave it or drive back home. Driving it there in the first place is 'iffy"

Thanks, I have the appointment for first thing Monday morning. I'd hate to ruin the engine, but don't want to pay for towing if I don't have to. Since the red light wasn't staying on, I planned to drive but thought I should ask. Thanks again.

Before you do anything else, simply check to oil to make sure it is up.

Go slow and don't rev it over 2000 rpm. If it seizes up the dealer will probably blame you.

Hi FoR. Good suggestion, except I would have left out 'probably'

FordNut - that was the first thing I checked. I wish it was that simple.

There is a reason we ask if the oil was checked or if something was plugged in. You would not believe some of the strange things we run into. Best of luck with it.

People post questions here about running out of gas and ask advice on what to do!

I should have been clearer, no offense intended! I I should have mentioned that I checked the oil level in the original post. I always appreciate starting with the basics.

If something is not mentioned in the original post we have to ask. Good luck Craig!

Just to be clear, I meant no offense to you, suggesting you didn't have the sense to check oil. Not 'No offense to us please" Best Wishes Craig..~~David

Follow up: It turned out to be a bad sensor. Thanks for all of your advice, glad I didn't pay for it to be towed!

Craig, What was the outcome of this issue with your 12 Jetta? I have a 12 Jetta 2.5 SE that is just starting to have the same problem.
