why should I have to leave heater on so van won't over heat

I start to drive and if i don't keep heater on my  an goes to 110 or more

keeping the heater on will help keep your engine cooler and help with over heating, but you shouldn't have to. It seems you are having an issue with your cooling system. Are your fans coming on when the van is up to temp? do you have enough water/antifreeze in the system?
