"the battery wouldnt hold a charge" -- Is the battery light on? What's the voltage with the engine running? It could be a bad battery or a bad alternator. Did you try a battery charger?

A fully charged battery will be between 12-13 volts. While the engine is running the reading should be between 13-14.5 volts. Is your instrument cluster the one with the "idiot lights" or the full gauges? I have seen many of the '00-'01 with leaking injectors due to contaminated fuel. I've also seen many '00-'01 with worn oil pump drives. The oil pump drive has the cam position sensor on top.
