2005 dodge stratus 2.7 blew a hole in reservoir due to overheating but temp gauge was normal

Asked by Jay Oct 19, 2018 at 12:48 PM about the 2005 Dodge Stratus SXT Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have replaced thermostat bleeder valve housing
and it still seems way to hot. I noticed that my fans
don't work unless the coolant sensor is unplugged
and doesn't seem to have any fluids traveling thru
the upper radiator hose.. although the upper
radiator hose is almost way to hot to touch... Any
suggestions

Think you may need to take a comprehensive approach to fixing it, as it may have more than one thing wrong with it, especially if high mileage. First, remove and test ECT, replace if bad. Same for thermostat. Check water pump is actually providing good flow. If coolant isn't reaching ECT then that may explain why it (and fans) aren't working, so again check coolant flow, upper hose is return from engine, bottom hose is feeding water pump, so no coolant flow out of engine means a serious blockage or bad pump. If you want to avoid an expensive engine rebuild, avoid letting engine run too hot too long. I don't have a manual so I couldn't tell you if water pump shares a cover with timing chain or if it overlaps oil pan, as it does on so many similar models, so replacing timing chain(s) is often done at same time as water pump. Good luck.

It was fine til the plastic reservoir blew a hole in it now it's all messed up. Lack of proper pressure due to the reservoir might be the whole problem
