12 Dodge Avenger Overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Dodge Avenger would periodically overheat and I took it to a garage that told me that I seem to just have an air bubble and so they fixed that and sent me on my way. It overheated again on our way back from vacation, but has been fine since, about 3 weeks.  Yesterday it started making a weird whistling sound, but my gauge was normal and now today, it overheated very quickly.  I let it cool and filled the overflow with coolant (it was empty probably from boiling over). I let it sit for a moment and then started the car with the cap off and within a minute, it was boiling again and overflow was empty when I shut the car off.  I repeated the process 3 more times with the same result and then had to just fill it again and get to work that was only about 10 minutes away. When I got to work, the overflow is again empty. Should I bother with troubleshooting or should I just accept that the head gasket is blown?

I would like to add that my heat has also not worked in about 3 years and I am told that it is due to buildup in the heater core and whole system, which I have read is a known issue with this vehicle. Again, shops have not wanted to fix the problem and replace the heater core because of the extensive work required, so they have just flushed it multiple times, which fixes if for only a short time before the heat stops working again.

It was tested and was told it was fine, but I have not had it checked this time or replaced.
