2004 dodge Dakota 4x4 4.7L v8 engine swap

I uave a 2004 Dakota with the 4.7L in it.. I have to replace
the engine. What engines are compatible? What work is
entailed on each?

I can't help you on which engine will specifically work, but of course a direct replacement will be the best bet for the amount of time, effort and cost. Installing any other engine not OEM is custom work. you will need to do some research if others have done any similar swaps. Check out some online Dakota forums. But when installing a different size engine you could have to also swap out the transmission and driveshaft, wiring harness, exhaust, ECM etc. So it's how much do you have to spend?
