No starting question

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When attempting a start, I head a noise sounding like something spinning
coming from the alternator area and after a few minutes had smoke and a
burning smell.

When turning the ignition now, there is one click, and nothing. The battery is
new.

I have attempted to locate the starter, but without success. Not sure how to
diagnose this or what what needs replacing.

sounds like the alt. bearing wore out and seized up , then the belt started burning up ,, that's usually how a serpentine belt breaks , one of the pulleys goes bad and ruins it , even a new batt. will give out after a while if it's not getting charged , an icon should have appeared on the dash when the alt. quit charge the batt. and don't let a new alt. charge a dead/weak batt
