turning the wheel while stopped puts stress on all front end components- don't do that- but the "popping" might be a CV joint going out- just guessin'

If you are getting the "popping" sound during turns while moving, as well as while standing still in park (as jamblues said you shouldn't do that if at all possible to avoid), then you definitely need a new CV joint, and there are 2 on each axle, so I would have both front half axles replaced. This will give you 4 new CV Joints and many miles of carefree motoring, because if one joint went bad, more than likely another will follow!
