I broke the glass on my Nav touchscreen. Thinking of repairing, replacing, or upgrading the whole unit. Any suggestions

How did you break the glass? There has to be a story here. Go to www.crutchfield.com for what will fit your vehicle. Their customer service is second to none.
lumber shifted in my car :( - Usually on a rack. I don't want to loose any original functions (screen dimmer) even if the old unit was clunky. I also do not use bluetooth etc. Just Nav, Radio, and usb smartphone. Looked at crutchfield - lots of spendy choices! How do I gauge compatibility to my existing controls? And are there intall tools / instructions you advise? Cheers
It may be worth your while to do a "Google" search on car radio repair and get your existing one repaired. Calling Crutchfield may be helpful as far as finding out what controls would be affected. Crutchfield can also provide wiring accessories and installation instructions.
