It is most likely your timing belt. A qualified technician will have to look at it to see if there is engine damage...sorry probably not what you want to hear before Christmas...:-(
sounds like you have the BIG broke. The engine light was probably a knock sensor as a result of loosing oil pressure. loosing power and grinding noises then nothing lead to engine failure. I swear I think something about this holiday season winds up costing people more money than it should. I hope that I;m wrong about this.
