Car keeps dying

Asked by Dominic Apr 20, 2019 at 05:47 PM about the 2002 Dodge Stratus SE Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 stratus has been stalling
while driving and dying out. Replaced
air filter and cracked hose. Problems
continued so took car to mechanic
said  valve cover gasket was broke
and oil was getting into spark plugs.
Had new spark plugs as well as valve
cover gasket put in. Replaced coil
pack with used unit. Car no longer
stalls but died twice within 100
miles. Any suggestions on what to
check next?

If your valve cover gasket was shot, then it is a good idea to have it replaced but it must have been leaking a significant amount of oil for it to seep past the threads on your spark plugs. When was the last time you had your other ignition parts replaced? If it has been more than 5 years or more than 100K miles, I would have wires, coil, distributor (if so equipped) cap and rotor replaced and the engine specs checked/set as needed.
