How does water get into the air pump system? 2012 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 - been in garage since April 7th.

Ok I have really been looking trying to get to the bottom of this. Are you talking about the secondary air injection pump for emission control, it's new to 2012 Tacoma.

That I don't have. Just got all that from research, hoping to help ..browsing forums, parts suppliers, car complaints sites. The truck is barely 3 years old and Toyota should stand behind it, they have a reputation to uphold. A 2012...you are past 3 years from date of sale or 36,000 miles? I think you are or they would not be talking money

I have a 2012 Tacoma FRD 4X4, had simla problem. Took it into the derler it was under warranty replace it for free. They said they have had no problrms with the Tacoma model which I think is BS,

You start your truck on a cold rainy day. The secondary air injection pump kicks in at a high rate. You start driving, that motor is not sucking clean dry air, it's sucking air with a lot of water. Now it finally shuts off and all that water has no where to go, so it sits inside the pump housing guess what. It's easy money Toyota service dept, takes 5 minuets to change out! That intake pump pipe should be connected up to the top of the intake box.

Just had my 2012 Tacoma go into limp mode. You guessed it, air injection pump/water. Blah blah bull $hit... $2000 in charges, dealer acted dumb when I asked them if it was a known issue. This is rediculous as I do not even have 60k miles yet... Toyota should be embarrassed for not standing by their product. I guess I'm only supposed to drive my truck when it is dry out and only park in a garage? Has anyone had any luck appealing this issue? How many times does this have to happen before a recall is issued?

2012 Tacoma 43,000 miles. Exact same response from the dealer. Out of warranty. I appealed to Tayota. 3 days later, sorry not our problem. That was my last Toyota or anything to do with them. There is too much evidence that this is a faulty design.

Several issues, Toyota had a piece of foam on intake pump which draw road debris/water into the motor. Instead of drawing air from the air intake pendulum. I am having a similar problem my 2012 Toyota Tacoma cel light and TRAC off light both came on speed was reduced to 35mph definitely not as much power as it should have. Took it to pep boys and they said it was the air injection pressure sensors bank 1 and bank 2 any suggestions?!

My 2012 tacoma experienced the same TRAC off light and engine light on Friday. Dropped it at the dealer the same day. Roughly $650 for part (new air injection pump) for a total of $798 repair. Parts are on back order (delivery Thursday) as the warehouse reports there has been a run on replacing these parts. Starting to sound like a problem part.

As the Tacomas get older, parts will start to wear out. This is an easy fix if you're handy with a wrench. Air pumps $150 plus labor. Sugest getting by pass kit so you'll have no more future issues with it. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

Here is another case....2012 Tacoma with the same issue. I have owned 5 Toyota trucks, a Forerunner and a Camry. If I have to pay $2,000 for this repair, I will never buy another one.

I live in Massachusetts, a Cali emissions state and I also work as a service writer in the automotive field. I pulled a few strings with the guys I know at the Toyota parts department. He read from the "dealer" warranty manual that secondary air pump systems fall into the 7 year, 70,000 mile emissions warranty. If you're not in a CA emissions state you may have to cough up the $800 to repair it. I've seen the air pumps for sale online in the $550 range for the DIYers.

Heard that Chevy S10 air injection pump is compatible with Toyota. Might have to swap out connections to make it work. 2000-2002 Chevrolet S10 Secondary Air Injection Pump.

2012 taco 96,000km just replaced secondary air intake pump at dealer. I agree that recall is in order.

Same thing. Check Engine Light, Trac OFF light. Dealership said Secondary Air Emissions System, can't tell what is wrong until they tear it down. Up to $2,000 to repair. My Tacoma has 56,000 miles. I agree a recall is in order. Or a class action law suit. This is ridiculous. I only drive Toyotas. That will end if they do not fix this.

my 2012 Toyota Tacoma, 71,800 miles. code P2442-P2440 secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open bank 1 and 2. Dealer blamed animal urine contamination of air pump which caused failure of air switching valve, really ??? bunch of BS ! took to another dealer who told me the Tundra had similar issues addressed with enhanced warranty. Told me to call Toyota to plead my case for coverage under warranty like the Tundra model. I called and we will see their response. The current dealer said I just need the valve assembly replaced not the pump yet.

We have a 2012 Tacoma, 110k on it, and it happened to us, too. $2000 cost. We were thinking of upgrading to a Tundra next time, but after reading these posts, and the frequency of this problem, we are really thinking maybe no more Toyotas.

My 2012 Tacoma 4x4 just had the same issue. They quoted my $2400 for the repair. After I said I would get a second opinion, the price dropped to $480.

2012 Tacoma 150000 kms. Pump and diverter valve. Told by Toyota that this is new to them...yet posted all over the internet. Faulty parts. Very disappointing for a Toyota. Started at $2,500 cdn at dealership, then $1,950, then $1,450...the more I bitched, the more they dropped the price. Still NOT COOL for a $40,000 truck. Probably my last Toyota.

Tacoma 2012. Same thing happen to me at 52,000 miles. Valves 1 and 2 stuck open. Cost at dealer $1,300+. Fixing myself, definitely water in the valve system (design problem) and they were stuck open. Anyone hear if there is a rebuilding kit for the valve system before I spend $450.00 on new valve set?

Same thing happened recently to my 2012 Tacoma. Just a heads up that my dealer charged for labor only, which was $489. This is clearly a known issue as they quoted me $2200 and then dropped it to labor only as soon as I balked at their quote. Apparently there are no after market parts for this issue and the OEM parts are a huge rip-off.

By the way, triggering limp mode for an emissions system failure is ridiculous as well as dangerous.

I repaired the problem by taking the valves apart and cleaned them using brake cleaner. Only took a couple of hours and they work & look like a new set.

I just experienced the same issue, CUL+TRAC OFF and limited power/accelleration. Limped in to the dealer who informed me it was P2442/P2440 codes, leaking air pump, bad air switching valves, and water intrusion. I took notes and started reading online. Glad to find this forum. I called Toyota Customer Care and they started a case for me. They are going to review my case and see what more they can do for me. Supposed to get their response within three days. If this happens to you make sure you do communicate it to Toyota and have them open a case number on it, don't just complain to the dealer. If we don't call them to complain they may not know how widespread the issue is. They did assure me that even though it isn't under warranty, if they do launch a program in the future I would be paid back at that time. One comment they made suggested that when they voluntarily cover something out of warranty, they may request customer participation--I assume that means I pay labor (approx. 3 hours). I'm optimistic this will all work out fine in the long run.

This just happened to us last week on our 2012 Tacoma with 30,000 miles on it. They quoted us a cost of 1200 to correct. Our service writer contacted Toyota to see if this can still be covered. It has been 4 days and we haven't heard anything yet. He did share that they may cover it or half the cost. This is crazy after I see so many complaints about it.

I have owned 3 Toyota 4x4 trucks since 1988. Each of them clocked over 250k. The last two clocked over 300k before I sold and bought a new one. I have a 2012 Tacoma that stays garaged and really only used during weekends. The truck has about 71k on it. This morning I got these same code indicator lights as i left for work. Had no idea there was such a thing as "limp mode". Keep in mind I have had 3 of these trucks and drove them all to 300k or above. As I accelerated to get on highway I felt lack of power. I had no idea what had just happened but I needed to keep my speed or I was going to be in a tight spot. Traffic was behind me and I was also merging into the first highway lane. Because of the location and design of highway there was a bridge that was in front of me. I couldn't just pull off or pull over to shoulder. I was able to get on highway but could only do about 25 MPH over the bridge. Cars were honking and people were screaming, but I was trying to keep speed and off to the shoulder if I could. This was an extremely dangerous situation. I was able to get the truck off the highway at the very next exit. I pulled off expecting something seriously wrong like fluid of something pouring out the bottom of the truck. Nothing appeared to be wrong with truck. I phoned the Toyota specialist that I have used to do maintenance and repairs on my trucks for the last 20 years. He only works on Toyota trucks. Immediately he explained to me that I was in something called "limp mode". He said it would be safer to have it towed, than to try and make it to his shop in "limp mode". While waiting on tow truck I pulled the codes with my code reader. P2440 and P2442. Why an emissions code would put that truck into this "limp mode", is beyond me. I live in California and I have certainly had some adventures getting some of my late model Toyotas Smog Tested. However, not one of them ever threw a CEL and left me in danger or stranded. After the truck was towed and diagnosed by my guy, he hit me with the $1800 repair for the air intake assembly. This certainly didn't seem reasonable to me. I have known this guy 20 years, so trust that he was being ethical. He looked into warranty and said it ended for me 1000 miles ago. Not Happy with Toyota, so I went to dealership. At first they didn't really act like they had heard of this issue. However after I recited the numerous on line threads of this exact problem as well as my own investigation with fellow Tacoma buddies, the service manger confessed to this being a known issue. After he explained that they also charge in the neighborhood of $2000 to fix the issue, I shook my head and left in my 4runner that has 330k miles on it. I am still trying to decide what to do here, but if this Toyota failure doesn't get resolved without me paying 2 grand, I'm done with these Trucks. The whole design of this air intake is flawed. How would this air intake system NOT take on water being open all the time? Ever heard of rain or condensation? Total engineering failure on their flagship off road vehicle. Hopefully there will be a class action lawsuit and we all get reimbursed for this kinda failure in design.

I was able to correct the problem by simply taking the valves apart and cleaning them with brake cleaning fluid. Parts look and work like new. It was clear that the valves were stuck open and after their were cleaned they should spring into a closed position. Took about an 1.5 - 2 hours to complete.

People of the used car market....I love how people say. "I'm never buying another one!" or "Toyota should fix this for free...forever" Give your head a shake and realize you have a vehicle out of warranty. Every manufacturer since forever has shit go wrong beyond warranty. If you don't want to fix your vehicle or deal with the responsibility of owning a vehicle.... Buss passes are cheap!!

This happened to me back in Feb 2018. I own a 2012 Tacoma. Went to pick up my wife in a snow storm. No power, ck eng. light and trac off light came on..took it to my local garage, they told me it was either the primary or secondary pumps. They called toyota, and the parts guy at the dealer told them this part is under Toyota's ENHANCED WARRANTY. Sothey relayed this information to me. Now these are good reputable guys, and they could have taken me for a ride. But they didn't. Instead they told me to call the toyota dealer. So I did, set up an appointment. As long as the vehicle had less than 150k miles on it, and it was the the problem we were talking about, it would be covered.. as it turned out, it was the the pump, but they didn't have the part in stock.so they actually rented me a car for 2 days while waiting for my truck to be repaired. No costs to me, they paid for car rental for 2 days and billed Toyota corp. For about $2000.00 for the repair. So today I recieve a notice from Toyota regarding these pumps. They will now reimburse or fix and repair at n/c if the truck has 150k or less and 10 years from date of first use. My only concern is that this new unit doesn't malfunction before the new parameters expire.

About a month ago I got a letter from Toyota informing me of the enhanced warranty. There was a reimbursement policy if you had already paid for the repair. It was a $2,400 repair that I had to pay for. Submitted the paper work about two weeks ago. No check yet from Toyota. We shall see.

Thanks guys for the post, just saved $2,100. Toyota delership service advisor playing dumb that he did not know about the warranty. I own a 2012 Toyota Tacoma the check engine and the TRAC OFF light came on and the truck was slow to accelerate. Took it to Toyota they ran their tests and told me it was the air pump and I would cost 2,100. Told the service guy it was too expensive and I can’t afford it, he offered 10% discount bringing the cost to 1,900, told him that still was too much and I will call him back. Checked online and found these post called the guy back and told him about the enhanced warranty from Toyota, told me he didn’t know anything about it but told me he will call me back, sure enough within 10 minutes he called back telling that they will cover all the cost because it was under warranty from Toyota, 10yrs unlimited miles. Really appreciate this feedback. Same story...2012 Tacoma 4x4, CEL and TRAC OFF light came on and went into "limp mode". It seemed like I was headed towards the $2,200 fix route, until reading this thread. I think the enhanced warranty would've worked, although the service advisor wasn't aware of it before I mentioned reading this. The advisor is telling me that Toyota is issuing a recall for this as of today (ironically enough), but I haven't seen that for myself.
