You don't. According to Edmunds the 2012 Jeep Patriot has a CVT, Continuously Variable Transmission..sealed, not even a dipstick

The manufacturer doesn't want you to check it...but you can. (Servicing it is another issue, as the dealers seem to only change the fluid or replace the tranny.) You'll need info from the service manual, as the correct level depends on the temperature. And you'll need the 9336A dipstick: https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Transmission-Dipstick-Chrysler- vehicles/dp/B071WYSMSB

You can check the transmission fluid on the Jeep Patriots but you have to go to AutoZone or someplace like that and buy specific style dipstick. They will give you the dipstick with a chart match up the numbers to properly fill your transmission. In order to have the transmission fluid changed you must take it to your dealership to have the fluid removed and reinserted
