Car won't start
Asked by joviola Jan 10, 2009 at 04:12 PM about the 2002 Dodge Caravan Sport FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I tried to start the car, it was similar to a dead battery (tried to jump just in case) but dash dials spun, wipers moved (front and back), and there was a clickng from either the fuse box or just below it.
This happend once previously but the car started after sitting for a while. This time however, this hasn't fixed the problem.

I just had s similar problem with an 04. I can almost definitely tell you its the battery. If you dont believe get a voltmeter and measure the voltage.
Hey had same problem, took to dealer, they said battery, we replaced it, 2 months later same thing, took it back. This time dash display light wouldn't shut off, towed to dealer, started right up for them, but then wouldn't shut off. Had a bad relay, didn't charge because of initial wrong diagnosis of battery.
The clicking noise sounds like a relay actuating. Could be the starter solenoid although I don`t know where that is on your model. Did the engine turn over at all?
One time it just did the clicking, we thought the starter was maybe going out because it wouldn't even jump stsrt. Left it for awhille came home after couple of hours, started right up. This last tie it just did like a dry cranking, like not getting fuel, but wouldn't start. Not sure where this relay is located but fixed the problem. This is an 06 with onlyhas 40,000 on it, wouldn't figure to have starting problems with that little mileage.
if the starter doesn`t turn the engine, even once, and then does, I would look there first to be honest. Faulty parts can happen with any car, any mileage in my experience. Definitely sounds like an electrical issue, starter or starter circuits. An auto electrician would be my first port of call. An alternator voltage check wouldn`t go amiss either, which is a simple and usually free check. Good luck!
Start by the most simple test before investing in battery or starter: check the cable terminals and terminals. These become rusted in the inside and does not make a good connection, fooling you about battery or starter.
Anythings possible, but I don`t see rust happening on a three year old car.....As the previous poster says, diagnose before buying parts. Most dealers will do a diagnostic check with their own diagnostic equipment for a nominal fee with no commitment.
I've had the same thing happen with mine. Battery was fine. The cable terminals needed replacing because the weren't making a circuit anymore. Corrosion had eaten through the really crappy terminals that were on the cables. I use a terminal scrubber and sandpaper to get down to metal on metal for better connection if the terminals are seriously corroded. So, now I am having the same problem, but have done what I can do. Time to take it in to my mechanic to check starter relays and such.

car starts when I get a boost and wiill not start after i shut it off battery is new what can I do
Many vehicles use a circuit that continues to crank the engine until it starts even though the key is released. If there's a failure in that circuit then the start relay may click but the engine won't start because it thinks it's already running. theoretically at least.

Happened to me four years ago, it was a bad battery. Happened again to me today, the battery was good so I beat on the starter with a hammer and it started. I pulled all the fuses and relays today and cleaned the posts before I smacked the starter.
I have a question my 2006 dodge caravan won't start we have a new starter and battery still nothing can a bad solenoid switch be the cause
I had the same problem I n my 02 grand caravan, after replacing the starter and hooking up a push button starter and no luck I changed the ignition switch and it started rite up,I just got it running today so hopefully.......

MY 2003 DODGE MINI-VAN, CARAVAN cut off in the driveway thank god while i am home. I was safe, didn't have to utilize triple aaa (only four calls a year)for 1 person) definitely adding on about three other family members this week, that'll be about 18 or more calls per year! and i was turning the ignition everything did light up, then it all went dark again. SMDH. Now...FOUR TO FIVE X i took it to rocky mount,nc mr.tire on w.thomas street location. I was told three short weeks ago, "Oh it was out of gas."We diagnose battery."Gave it a FULL power charge. So, you're fine now. FALSE. It cut off this morning/started making ODD NOISES a day or two ago. I just got it towed to a sunday mechanic open, same business there at mr.tire and i hope he can tell me the problem, (Exact problem)if starter i will replace it with dad/mom. If not and somethin bigger just let us know so we can junk it or keep it and use as a spare car(emergent) and then buy another lil used or pre-owned new used car or something, because this is gettin out of hand. Been having same issue for now months.(I bought battery almost 1 year ago in aug. last year.)1 mechanic on fone say, "starter issue/and/or battery replacement, or something like the "coil?"engine light been on for six months, and i did have them change a few other things on it. But not all the coils they had mention this before, so i will re-post when i have it fix today or on Monday, when i know why the dodge caravan 2003 is not starting again."
My suggestion is take the positive cable off and wait 5 minutes then put it on so it can reset the brain, it worked for me
Reset the brain by taking the positive cable off wait 5 minutes it worked for me

i appreciate your answer pump. i know we took it in and i am here to leave what happened for others to read. i was told, "You're going to need a BRAND-NEW ALT. so, we had the alternator replaced. - He didn't mention anything else. That was it. I save a few hundred off the whopping 609 or i think $603 it would've cost if i let Mr.Tire in NC get me the alternator." - That was the reason the mechanic said all this was happening.
My 2011 occasionally would not start. Like maybe once/month. Bought it new, this happened first time only a month later. Dealer found no cure, problem never replicated at his shop. Symptom was only a click, like a solenoid makes if the battery is weak. Only option was to keep trying and after 10 or more tries, it started. Finally found that 1. turn key to RUN position. 2.Move shift lever to REVERSE then back to PARK. 3. turn key to START and it works.
my 2008 dodge caravan won't start but all of the windows and locks work just fine this happen before but then nothing worked not sure what it is now.
My 2000 dodge caravan won't turn over. An I need help :(
I have a 05. Check engine light was on for gas cap even though replaced a few times. Now wont turn over at all. Replaced alt, not bad. Replaced battery. Started once with boost. Ran about an hour. Now nothing. Got new starter. It was bad. Now again, nothing. No dash lights when you try to start or anything. But the radio and lights come on in account. Mode. Help please!!
Hello, i have 2008 dodge grand caravan, and drove down road, shit it off and now wont start..starter wire from sylonid to starter was broken. Went out got a new starter put on van, and still nothing..lil click when u turn key to run position but does not start. And ideas on what to try..i check all fuses and starter relay in fuse box. Need to know what to try next..battery is still strong running all my lights and stuff.
Most problem in these make is fuel pump when it's cold then you will have these problems.2 battery is the nex thing to when it gets cold. They lost power too.rember your minivan Ned 13.5 and when the voltage drop it Ned the power from some way so it caused these problems to happen.so keep your battery power up
my van wont turn over left it for afew days came back annd it started any help please and thankyou
I have the same problem I bought a brand New battery I bought a brand new alternator I bought brand new cables for the battery still nothing. I took it to the Dodge dealer they told me $250.00 A hour They told me they had miles Of wire to trace and they had a couple more hours to trace the wires I told them to stop right there I started disconnecting the negative cable from the battery my problem still exists some time to start sometimes I don’t even when I disconnect the cable
I have no dash lights no interior no back up lights is this because of faulty remote starter

Hi All dodge minivan owners. I have a 2010 caravan. Had since 2012, now 120K miles. I have had a lot of electrical issues. The worst was the headlights just flash and turn off. All these modern vehicles use the computer to control every item. The light switch is low current, just a signal voltage to tell the brain to turn on the lights. So dirty switches can be a major problem. If the switches get wet, door window left open can cause problem. However the biggest problem is a bad ground. Under the fuse box is a terminal post , all the wires to the ground post are just crimped. After stripping all the wires and soldering lugs to each wire, adding extra big ground straps to battery, chassis and engine all my problems were fixed. If in doubt add another ground cable. Being that all the switches only use a very small current any bad contact will be unreliable. I’m sorry I just don’t like crimped copper wire connections, if your going to use a crimp then you must use tinned copper wire. That’s my 10 cents of advice.. Dick Marsh

My 2008 Dodge Caravan will not start, I let it sit for a few seconds and then turn the key and it starts right up. I had a new ignition put in 2 yrs. ago under the recall, have had to replace many parts and car is still doing this. This problem started shortly after I bought the car 7 years ago and no mechanic has found it yet. The car will not make a sound. It is like it is just sitting in the driveway waiting for someone to start it up and then all of a sudden it will start. Does anyone have any idea what it could be. In the last year I have put over 2,000 dollars into this car, parts seem to be going like crazy.
It could be the key transmitter or the WIN wireless ignition
Mine wouldnt crank over it was a loose starter wire
My 2014 Dodge caravan has a band new battery (3 weeks ago) it sometimes would not start at first, would hear some clicking and now it won’t start at all! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm here because I'm having the same "not starting" problem with my 2008 Dodge Caravan. I changed the batteries in the key fob and thought I had it fixed, but since it only does it once out of 50 or so starts, I can't tell when it's fixed or not! I had a new computer put in it last year so that's not it, battery is new. I had the starter checked and the mechanic didn't find anything wrong, but said the starter could be going out on it. I don't trust driving it anymore because it's so sporadic - I never know. So now I'm debating on going ahead with getting the starter changed or maybe starting with the ignition (didn't know there was a recall on that).
