2002 4.7 V8 idling low and stalling.

Asked by O_nippie Apr 18, 2015 at 02:25 AM about the 2002 Dodge Dakota SLT Plus Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2002 4.7 L Dakota quad cab. For probably 6 months I have been having some
troubles with the idle. The idle constantly changes from 700 to 500 RPM, and
sometimes lower. At some points it will start idling around 300 RPM and then when I
come to a complete stop it will probably stall out. It has stalled out multiple times,
sometimes when I'm at a full stop and sometimes when I'm coasting slowly (like
through a parking lot for example). Most times after it stalls it does not have any
problem starting back up, but it will idle low for a while. A few times it has stalled and
has not been able to keep itself running. It will stay running if I keep my foot on the
gas, but wont idle. I figured out that if I unhook the battery for a few minutes then hook
it back up it will reset and start idling around 700 RPM again, but that will last maybe 2
or 3 weeks. I have replaced the throttle position sensor, the idle air control, the battery,
and I have cleaned the throttle body and it continues to happen. Not really sure what
else I can replace to get this fixed. Insight would be greatly appreciated.

The only other things I can think of that would really affect your idle would be a dirty MAF or a bad Engine Coolant Temp sensor. You can remove your Mass Air Flow and clean it with a can of CRC MAF cleaner. Your ECT is usually under $20. Do you have a check engine light on?

Does it still have a low idle when your ac is on, or in neutral or in reverse.

I have had the same problem with my 2002 dodge Dakota. Replaced TPC, cleaned throttle assembly, had the fuel injectors/fuel system cleaned. Every time I do something it will work great for 4 or 5 days then go back doing the same thing

Did you have your vehicle smog checked recently? I believe at least in California that the new 2014 smog machines are reprogramming ECM's and PCM's to reduce emissions by lowering the minimum idle speed after you take your foot off the gas.

My does the same thing. I noticed the idle would go up when the a/c was turned on. Also at higher speeds (60-70 ) the rpms would fluctuate between 21 -1900 . This is very frustrating. Let me know if you resolved the problem
