Transmission oil

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I accidentally added 3QT of CVT fluid instead of ATF into my transmission. Now transmission works MUCH BETTER then before. All noises are disappeared  , Vibration - disappeared , Automatic shifting very smooth  , even gas consumption improved.  Should I drain and fill with ATF or continue to stay as it now?
Thanks

My guess is the transmission works better because you were low on fluid. There is no way to know what the end results will be. Keep us updated on how the transmission works.

Hi F_O_R , all due my respect , but transmission was not low on fluid. As matter as fact now it works better then all priory my cars. But all mechanics and Subaru specialists persists that I need now drain and fill 3 times. It's not big deal , but I hesitate because trany works so well. I downshift on big speed ,and no kick at all, just rotation speed increased. But your answer concerns me. So I think to make drain and fill 3 times. Thanks

Did you drain fluid before adding the three quarts? Either it was low, you over filled it or you had drained fluid out. You did not say why you added fluid.

One mechanic accidentally drain my transmission when changing engine oil. Another mechanic fill 3 QT of CVT Fluid instead of ATF . F_O_R , I compare characteristics of ATF and CVTF. ATF and CVTF have very close viscosity and gravity index. So presser of convertor would be same. However CVTF has 1. Better steel-to-steel protection 2. Better thin film protection. Most difference if friction modifier. But as far as I know some manufactures add friction modifier to ATF to improve sliding of wet clutch. Please consider about fact. Your opinion would be very important for me. Thanks

F_O_R. One mechanic accidentally drain transmission instead of engine. Another mechanic add CVT fluid instead of ATF . But Look , I compare characteristic of CVTF and ATF. Viscosity and Gravity index the same. It means that presser of converter would be the same. But CVTF has : Better lubrication , Better steel_to_steel protection , Better thin film protection. The most dramatic difference is Fluid Friction ( for pulley belt ). But as far as I know , some ATF manufactures added components for Liquid friction to improve Sliding of wet clutch. Tht's exactly what happen in my Forester. Any sliding gone , works much more stable and smoothly. You are right , and I decided to Drain and Fill 3 times with interval 500-1000 miles. Thanks you very much

Don't think you can used ATF in a CVT. Maybe you dodged the bullet...........this time.
